| I like the idea of MM, i haven't gone this year, but have been to Cardiff both times, it allows fans to have a fun day out and watch teams play eachother that we would never normally be able to watch live, without playing against your own team. 30k, oh well.

| Quote ="chapster"with official attendance less than 30k in rugby unions scottish home, i think we need a serious debate about the pr value of the magic weekend.
1 its bloody embarrasing
2. it shows our sport in a bad light
3. the games are played in a weird atmos
4. kick and clap mob wet themselves
5 real fans miss out to local cheapies / freebies due to expense of travel etc
6 fixtures are random surely whole sport need one home and one away game against each team?
7. im sorry expansionists but it didnt work in wales so why will it work in scotland?
8. and most importantly... i hate it!'"
Go watch moronball.

| total garbage
1 how much did murrayfield cost?
2 how much was actually paid to attend today, i mean paid with money, not freebies.
3 did this make it a profit or loss for the clubs?
4. ooh 1/3 full rugby union stadium, oh boy that makes us look good doesnt it? especially when we had 6 teams loyal fans in there!
5. it does not actually expand anything, no scottish team could get 8k minimum sl franchise amount, as no welsh team has. cumbria maybe, scotland no!
merely dealing in economics and cash, it does not work ful stop.

i never watch moron ball, but i have a degree in economics and i work as an accountant!
i just dont see ther logic in mm, financially or in terms of strategic growth for our product and if you do tell me why.

| ok my personal fav is newcastle, and is play a weekend of challenge cup games there, say the last 16 over 2 days.
reasons
1.near enough to cumbrian heartland,a nd would include all rl not just sl
2.real expansion possibilities
3. would be real top day out for all rl fans!
thoughts?

| As I've said on another thread, the point of of MM is to expand the game. But the RFL only seems to market the game to exsisting fans. I'm not saying they shouldn't but given that we're only getting about 30k a day each year that's not going to fill the stadiums that are being picked for these events.
I went last year and had a great time in cardif. However, I don't think I saw anyone inside the stadium from cardif who wasnt serving food or drink (not that I actually went round and asked each person individually where they were from)
Now, this to me seems wrong. We KNOW we're not going to fill the stadium so why not get a few key players from each club and send them into local schools. It's no different from what most clubs do already. A school assembly in 2 parts. First part about fitness and healthy living etc etc and the 2nd part about RL and the MM weekend. And at the end you hand out a junior ticket which requires a full price adult. So you get local people going to the game, so that's a boost on the gate and additional revinue from food & drink and other concession stands. And if you get these people interested in the game then that's a boost which at the end of the day is the whole point of the weekend right?

| I've always thought the game should try to expand gradually from its geographic core. So, I'd be looking at an MM wweekend at places like Old Trafford; Hillsborough; Liverpool; with say 30,000 free tickets to locals in each city. The current thing does nothing to expand the game and goes to remote areas which are unlikely to be able to produce a sustainable team / competition. If the game can't convince people to watch it in those culturally similar areas to its "heartland"then, if we are being realistic rather than optimistic fantasists, it'll never establish itself meaningfully anywhere in the country.
