To be fair the whole thread is ridiculous, I don't get why hudds fans (and coaching staff) get so worked up because people have commented they may slump. It's what they do EVERY year, get your head down go out on the field and carry on winning through all season for a change and then nobody can aim that criticism at them again.

Is it because Wigan have lost to Cas they are having there slump? Wane stated Cas have been the best team to play at the DW this season so maybe its Wigan have played 2 tough games. Wire and Cas. Doesn't mean they are in a slump. Still top of the league.

They're winning but they're not playing well and have been a tad fortunate to come against a busted Leeds side and a abysmal Catalans side. You could say it's a sign of a good side, but they'll have to up their game if they want to win something this year. I also fear for them if Brough were to get injured, as good as Cudjoe, Lunt, and a few of their other players have been Brough is the heart and soul of the team, and seems to be the only creative player they have.

Hudds fans can start shooting off at the mouth IF Fartown actually win a pot. The Giants are still a way off that imo. Pretty daft thread this. No wonder other clubs take the mick out of us.

And exactly how are Wigan in a slump? Top of the league with key players missing to boot. Geez.

i clearly stated it was a tongue in cheek bit of fun because its Wigan who have lost 2 in a row - if it were us then everyone would have been saying the slump has started ----Jeez, humour has obviously bypassed this forum

Does anyone still care who wins the regular season? Whenever Wigan do it, it's derided as the 'hubcap', so I presume not.

I suppose I'm very old-fashioned but I still believe that the true League Champs are the team that finishes 1st after the regular season. I feel the playoffs & Grand Final are just a sham cooked up by TV. If you don't finish top of the heap after the regular rounds then you're not true Champions imo.

But unfortunately the game has completely changed now.

For the vast majority of its history RL has had no automatic P+R and the champions have been crowned by the winner of a play-off/Grand Final.

Odly I think it would be more beneficial to the Giants to win the League Leaders Shield in terms of raising the profile - more people understand the concept of the champions being the table toppers.

(I fid it funny that on one hand we say the Playoffs are a traditional way of crowning champions then saying we have to have P&R because "thats what people understand" despite it not being part of RL history. But thats another thread)

What is this based on? I don't think you're giving Super League supporters enough credit. I'd say the majority understand how the sport they follow works.

You can't justify calling the winners of the regular league 'champions', because you're only champions if you win the competition as it's set up. As a Wigan fan, I've never questioned that.

It's legitimate though for people to question how the competition should be set up so as to decide 'champion' status. Finishing the league with a knockout with 8 sides in it is too far me. We already have a cup competition. The system has its merits and I was comfortable with top five.

I actually really, really rate Anderson and Purtill aswell as his number 2. I spoke to him in pre season - he told me about a camp that they had been on which he believed would give them a mental toughness heading into the back end of the year.

I really think more should be done to place importance on finishing 1st over the weekly rounds. Maybe sending them straight through to the Grand Final. Difficult the way the league is currently set up. Should be a good end to the season.

My comment about people recognising "champions" as being the table toppers refers more to non RL fans - since the accusation often levelled at Huddersfield is that it's a soccer town

(The lack of P&R is also attacked because non RL fans apparently don't understand it, as does the general playoff at times)

As it stands the champions are the Grand Final winners, but I think that's also devalued winning the league which is a Herculean task in itself and should be recognised as something to win in its own right

The only way that winning the league has been devalued is not by what the league leaders are awarded, but in that it's less of a competition that it would be if that was the ultimate prize.

I don't get this continued idea that non RL fans won't get that the league leaders are not recognised as the main champions. Why? You only have to look at England biggest sport of football, in the leagues below the premiership they have playoffs, and on quite a few occasions a team who finished 5th/6th and up to 10 points lower than 3rd have won promotion. In the Premiership teams finish 3rd and 4th and enter a 'Champions' League.

Playoffs are used in globally massive American sports......why is it SL Playoffs apparently confuse the rest of the world and embarrass the sport if a lower ranked team actually win it?
