| I know people won't like the idea of Chase playing for England but it makes in more competive for places. For me I would still have Gareth Widdop at 6 though. Lets hope a few players pull their fingers out and fight for a place rather than just expect to start. Its nice to have a few options for a change ![Smile icon_smile.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_smile.gif)

| Quote ="Leyther_Matt"Spot on. Was still deciding on whether or not to go to the Wembley double-header, but this news has definitely made my mind up for me...I'll be at Hibs vs Dunfermline that day! What an absolute shambles that completely cheapens the whole concept of international RL. Couldn't care less if cricket does it etc etc etc, it still means a GENUINE English player will be missing out to someone who is only turning out for England because his own country didn't pick him.'"
Clearly you never had any intention of going then, a player being called into a training squad is no guarantee he will make the main squad never mind the team
it's not just you but thousands of RL fans will fail to attend the games, any excuse for some people or even no excuse at all

Is he good enough? Certainly
So why complain about a player who makes the team MUCH stronger getting picked? The one you should be complaining about is the Aussies picking Fiji international Uate in their squad.

I've not missed an England/GB home game in nearly 10 years so I think it's fair to say that I [idid[/i intend to go to all of the games. As far as I'm concerned McNamara should have told Chase to sling his hook as he should have declared his intention to play for England much, much earlier in the season as other players have in the past. Where's the pride in beating the Aussies if it's done with New Zealand's cast offs?

No idea, ask an Aussie. Fair to say they (Australia) haven't exactly done much to further the cause of international RL in the past, wouldn't you agree?

We will never know if the cynics are right but, if Chase wants to play for England, I see no reason to deny him, except on his performance. It's not like England haven't used overseas players before. At least he's a good un.
There's no guarantee that he'll get picked, and it will give us a strength in depth in that area that we haven't seen for a long time. I was more concerned when I saw Kevin Brown in an England shirt, to be honest. That, in itself, shows the paucity of quality halves we have at the disposal of our national team.

Gareth Widdop has played out a full season at stand off for Melbourne Storm who finished top of the NRL table. I’m not sure Chase makes us that much stronger it requires capital letters

Is there any audio available for this interview? Prepared to take it back if this was an on-the-spot interview, but it smacks of 'constructed press release' to me.

That's absolutely right. Chase may never even be selected. But, should we have a few injured halfbacks going in to a tournament, he is one hell of an option. Better than having to use the likes of Kevin Brown, anyway.

Draft a press release; leave it in the outbox. Rangi Chase not in NZ Squad. Send from Outbox. Simples.

Remember Mauri Faasavalu a couple of seasons back.
Cant remember anyone up in arms over this player in an england shirt.
It happens in every sport.

There was actually a similarly poor reaction to that particular selection if memory serves me right?
In Fa'asavalu's defence, he didn't have another nation to represent in the Four Nations, unlike Chase. That's not to say I agreed with Fa'asavalu's inclusion.

They were.
But this is why English RL has been so far behind, every other country will pick the best players available to them no matter where they were born - England are starting to do so now and it's about time too.
Some people on here were sulking because others were saying Harrison Hanson isn't English - well he chose not to play for England yet when someone who qualifies for England on the same grounds as him does want to play for England everyone is up in arms about a "non-Englishman" being picked ![Rolling Eyes icon_rolleyes.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_rolleyes.gif)

As he has said, he din't know that he was eligible then. He is making a life in England and now wants to play for his adopted country. If he has a right to do so, what's the problem?
If this helps make our international team more competitive, I'm all for it.
Would you turn down Jack Reed? He is English but, other than with a period playing in Yorkshire amateur teams, largely Australian trained and living in Australia. Similar story with Gareth Widdop. Neither can be said to be products of the English pro game. They are both products of the Australian system.
I would be happy with any of these players and, indeed, any player who qualifies to play for England who can add quality and depth to the squad. If this gets us a little closer to the Aussies and NZ then it is worth it.
As I wrote earlier, we've done it before with Faasavalu. I understand the misgivings some people have and the fact that it leaves less options for young English players but, if they are good enough, they'll get their chance.

You do realise that Hansen is a British citizen, grew up in England, went to school in England, played all of his junior rugby in England and represented England at Academy level, don't you? Very different scenarios as far as I'm concerned.

Yet after all that he chose not to represent England, where as Rangi Chase wants to play for England and opted to play for England as soon as he knew he was allowed to do so. IMO that makes Chase more English because he wants to represent the country.

If he wants to represent England so much then he can apply for a British passport.
