| Quote ="Starbug"No you dont need to build pressure and territory, if you are losing you need to score, simple as, now if you want attempt to appear clever, just as mr Clark did and does on a regular basis
Building pressure and territory is nothing more than a by product of attempting and failing to score, you watch the Aussies this winter, they will just score, they will try to score every time they have the ball, simple as'"
So, tackle four, on your own 10. Are you putting this through hands or looking for an offload in traffic to score? Or are you running a simple drive up the middle for a quick PTB to set up the kick?

| Wigan just ran a set from their own 20 which included all of two passes in the entire set after the dummy half pass. No runner looked to offload and all looked only to get down and play the ball, then Wigan kicked. Were they looking to score on that set?

| Building pressure is secondary to scoring, if you can't score at least keep the opposition defending and attacking in their own half.

And Wigan were leading by how many?
The point was that Mr Clarke suggested last night that a team losing by 2 scores should not ' Prioritise ' scoring, complete bollox

Earlier you said (Australia) "they will try to score every time they have the ball, simple as"
Are you adding a criteria of the match score now that might change this approach? Or should the approach of Australia or Wigan be specifically unique?

It matters not, the Aussies dont need to follow normal rules, they'll score most of the time
Anyway you like Clarky were wrong, as I said building pressure and field position is a by product of failing to score

No, they won't score most of the time.
They'll look after field position.
They'll build pressure.

Oh well......now you have actually said it twice, you must be right.

Seems that way. Odd that such a keen RL fan doesn't actually understand the game.
If teams are trying to score off every set, why are there so many kicks for territory/field position?
If I had a penny for every time I've heard the phrase "f*ck's sake lads, we don't need to score off every set", I'd have at least £10.

Teams kick for territory/field position when they have failed to make a break/find a gap in the opposition defence, but every set starts with an attempt to score, it really is that simple

So you are only allowed to create try scoring opportunities in the oppositions 20 ?
RL = Simple game
You have the ball = you are trying to score
You dont have the ball = you are trying to stop the other team score

| I'm with Starbug here.
Make a break from your own ingoal on a zero tackle, past the defensive line, step the fullback, daylight in front of you....then wait on the 10m line, let a covering defender get you, the crowd go absolutely mental
"What the f' was he doing, he could have scored?"
After the game Rod Studd brings it up and the player replies with.
"Well, i didn't want to score on a zero tackle, i wanted us to build some pressure"

Entirely missing the point.
Imagine you're starting possession five metres from your own line. What kind of plays are you going to run?
Are you going to look to move the ball across the pitch? Are you going to look to offload in contact? These have a good chance of making a break leading to a score, but also risk losing possession.
Are you looking for simple plays and quick PTBs? These have little chance of making a break and leading to a score, but will help maintain possession so enable a kick for territory or to contest later in the tackle count.
Playing the second option was what Phil Clarke was talking about.
