| Quote ="EHW"Yep, the Catalans team that was taken to the cleaners a couple of weeks ago by Saints would definately be more competitive than Saints in the WCC.
Fact is, Saints are one of the best teams in SL. We didnt actually play that badly last night, despite the scoreline. I dread to think what would have happened to most other SL clubs against Souths.
Don't forget that Souths also won their own Grand Final by 30odd points.'"
this.
saints weren't particularly poor they tried hard, never gave up but were just slaughtered by a far superior team with class all over the field.
i doubt any team northern or southern hemisphere could have got close to souths!

| Quote ="The Avenger"The Souths team is not a typical NRL side, every now and then in sport you get something special and that's Souths at the moment.
Whatever the reason, be it Crowe, The fight to be re admitted, Souths history, the Burgess story, Something specials happened at Souths.
There's other sports looking at how Souths prepare their athletes in much the same way that they once (and still do) looked at the NFL. Those athletes are some of the best and most coveted in the NRL and some are coveted by a number of other competitions and sports like no other group of Rugby League players are or ever were.
Sts got blown away, however Souths would have beaten any team of Rugby players on the planet on that form whether they're from SL, the NRL or any side pulled together in Union including the All Blacks!
Of course we're behind the Ausies, while ever we are an after thought of a sport in the UK we will always be behind them, this chase to catch them is unrealistic.
=#FF0000They are for all intents and purposes the National sport of Australia, they get the pick of the best athletes available to them and also have the pulling power to make gifted athletes change their nationality. They have a profile which attracts the type of sponsorship, advertisers and hospitality customers that SL can only dream about.
They have a TV contract that compares with the Premier League (not quite) but it dwarfs that of the SL. That in turn allows them to invest in facilities which are at the cutting edge of athlete preparation, stuff we won't get over here for a decade or so later if ever.
Every now and then we will assemble a team capable of beating their NRL counterparts but not this Souths team, they're too good and are a freakish product of a perfect storm'"
Cricket is the National sport.
AFL had far more coverage in Australia.
Rugby League is strong in two States only.
This Souths team is good but not the all time best you are making out.
They came third in the NRL premiership in 2014.
The Roosters are every bit as good.

With which part?
Cricket is indeed the National Sport of Australia,
AFL does get more coverage than NRL across Australia,
Rugby League is only strong in 2 Australian States,
The current Bunnies side is good, but not the best in the last 10 years, let alone all time,
they did finish 3rd in 2014 and won only 3 more games than 10th Placed Parramatta Eels. They lost more games in 2014 than 2013 and 2012.......
and the chooks are as good if not better, but were defeated in the one-off final in 2014 after winning one and losing one in the regular season.

I thought Saints were very poor actually. Plenty of effort but that's a given in the Pennine League never mind the SL champions. Saints looked slow and lethargic from the start and never really got into their stride. Their timing of both running and passing was off all game and the forwards didn't really show up bar a couple of notable exceptions.
Obviously I don't know this for certain but it appeared the occasion got to Saints and they looked a bit overawed and as if they'd wasted their energy pre-match. I also think they're lacking a bit of leadership. Wilkin, whilst trying manfully, isn't a halfback and seemed to be the only leader on the pitch for Saints. They needed some more and definitely some leadership in the pack. They've some good players in their pack but not really any leaders, though the likes of Amor might become them in the future.
I think if Saints had played to their best they'd have run Souths close

| It's popular all over. When NRL teams play in Perth or Darwen or somewhere (thousands of miles away!), they attract very decent crowds indeed. All the more so when you consider few local fans will make the trip because of the cost and distance. Bigger crowds than Wigan or Saints would attract if they staged games in London, Southampton, Glasgow, wherever.

RL gets very little attention and is well down the sports pecking order in half the country. It is not by any stretch a national game, yet, never mind THE national game.

| None of the major sports give a cr*p about Darwin except to pick up the odd indigenous player. RL is big in NSW and Queensland, a bit player in Melbourne (easily the second biggest market in the country) where AFL rules, and nowhere at all in Adelaide or Perth. By comparison AFL has two sides in Queensland and NSW, and rules Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
However, the NRL dwarfs SL - financially, number of players at a high level etc. Its also been helped a lot by the financial problems in RU. Its not that long ago that the ARU was raiding the NRL for talent - Sailor, Tuqiri, Rogers etc. They would have continued that game forever and a day had they not run out of cash.
My main issue with increasing the Salary Cap is that the very first thing that would happen is that existing players at all the teams that could afford to pay more would get pay rises - for doing nothing at all more than they already are. Basically we'd see wage inflation for precisely zero benefit to the sport as a whole. You also cannot and should not allow clubs to bankrupt themseleves, so SL should definitely retain elements of the cap aimed at keeping clubs solvent.
Rather than an across the board increase, I would look at marquee player allowances (plus potentially homegrown player discounts).

Firstly, Wikipedia is about as reliable as an IRB calculator.....beware, because regardless of what criteria the author wants to use, the Facts are often a different matter. TV figures from 2009 for TV? Really? TV figures that no doubt include State of Origin?
ACT is a RL dominated state eh? Someone tell the Brumbies, because they've owned the Raiders attendance wise for a few years now....30% bigger average last year.
Here's a FACT for you. Not a Wiki-fact, but an ACTUAL fact.....Twice as many fans attended 207 AFL games as did 201 NRL games in 2014.
Break these fans down across the NATION....as we are talking about THE NATIONAL SPORT OF AUSTRALIA.
Over 800,000 attended 22 AFL games in Perth averaging over 36,350. .......2 Games of NRL averaging 16,500.
Over 1,000,000 attended 22 games in Adelaide...averaging over 45,000...0 games of NRL averaging 0
Over 390,000 attended 22 games in Queensland averaging 17,727.....36 NRL games averaging 20,300
Head to head, in their dominant states,
NSW delivers 2,000,000 fans to 120 home games 16,666 a game
Victoria delivers 4,000 fans to 88 home games at 45,450 a game
6,971,000 AFL fans with 40% of these outside of Victoria v 3,376,000 NRL fans with 29% outside of NSW.
I still say Cricket is the National Sport of Australia, but if you are looking for a dominant code of football across the nation, then currently the AFL is the biggest based on actual attending fans. NRL is second followed closely by soccer, which is growing at an alarming rate and also has teams in exotic places like Perth and Adelaide

Got to love stats,
and yet more people watch nrl on TV than any other sport in Australia. Regional nsw and qland where RL rules by a country mile, excuse the pun, has a bigger population than perth and adelaide combined. In next ten years we will see brisbane2 and perth added to further increase RL's reach and popularity. Afl has had a 18 year head start following the SL disaster. NRL won't take that long to catch up in terms of expansion and national reach.
Afl is ahead but not for long.

The TV data depends on if you believe in the antiquated way in which TV companies continue to collect information. Fortunately sport is about much more than the top tier professional clubs. Pub teams matter as well.....
The Victorian Rugby League (VRL) is pleased to announce that 2014 has been the most successful season for player participation levels in Rugby League within Victoria, increasing player registrations by 17 percent in the past 12 months to surpass the record participation level set in 2013.
www.playnrl.com/record-year-for- ... by-league/
“In 2013 we had a 19.3 per cent increase in registrations, which is the biggest year-on-year rise recorded in any state,” says John Sackson, chief executive of the WARL.
“Coming off such a jackpot, we thought this season it would be hard to maintain, but we’ve actually gone ahead and are up another six per cent.
“We have the highest number of players outside NSW and Queensland. This is despite the fact that Victoria has an NRL team and eight development officers, and we obviously don’t have an NRL side and have just three development officers.”
