Watkins and BJB are clearly the most exciting option, but id want Tomkins in there. If anyone is dropped for Watkins it has to be Yeaman. And as a Leeds fan I certainly wouldnt take BJB over Hall.

Watkins was shown up very badly in defence by Francis Meli earlier in the season, Meli ran over him and around him time and time again. He isn't quite ready yet, certainly one for the future though.

One wing should undoubtedly be Yeaman and Briscoe, with the other out of a choice from:

Wing: Hall, McGilvary, Jones-Bishop and Charnley. Maybe Broughton and depending on what kicking options there is in the team Foster. (Foster only if there is no other goal kicking options.)

Centres: Atkins, Bridge, Shenton, Tomkins and Cudjoe.

Watkins and Jones-Bishop are right sided though so I don’t see it as a choice between Watkins and Yeaman but Watkins and Tomkins in this regard. As the year has progressed I think Tomkins has put himself in contention for the right centre spot but I think Watkins has all the talent in the world and would do well if he got a chance internationally

As for the wings... I would go with BJB if we were talking partnerships to partner Watkins... but for me, the best right winger in the competition this year has been McGillvary and he has shown the same strength and finishing as Hall and Briscoe have

I think we are lucky to have three wingers in Briscoe, Hall and McGillvary who can compete internationally... a partnership from any two of these would be light years ahead of the Calderwood and Gardner partnership we had in the last world cup

Not sure how you can say Hall is a better finisher to be honest.

The glass half full crowd would say that Briscoe is more efficient at turning the chances he gets into tries, irrespective of where he gets the ball. His Centre is renowned for not passing to him that often, yet despite this he still produces the good when given the chance.

Hall has scored 20 tries playing outside Carl Ablett, a player doing a good job but not a centre. I dont think Hall being better means Briscoe isnt good.

Tomkins would be out of his depth he's not even a centre imo

I think Watkins still has things to learn defensively and would be a nod to the future. Id like to see him with Ellis next to him. Going forward he is very creative, big, strong, speedy.

he's only got his chance because of the lack to 3/4 talent coming through the NRL..his 50m solo "miracle" try he scored against melbourne owed itself more to shocking tackling tha wonderful play..the last melbourne storm defender bloody runs away from him!!!

Definatly Tomkins at full back with Yeaman and Briscoe the left centre/wing partnership.

Then on the other side:

Wingers - Hall, Charnley or Jones Bishop.
Centres - Tomkins, Bridge, Cudjoe or Watkins.

A fair assessment although I would say McGilvray is a real contender for the right wing spot... fast, strong and with a good workrate

Cant see any problem with that. Cudjoe is great in attack and standard in defence and Charnley is good in defense and a good finisher.

I do think McGillvray should be given a chance though. Great talent but might be a year too early for him.

its nice to see a good argument about the relative strengths of a couple of very good left wingers eligable for england.

Gerry also has a very very good attacking kick on him too, able to put the ball back inside for the likes of Tomkins (s)

Aye, seen him do it a few times this season, never seems to panic unlike some other wingers.

with Cudjoe in the squad as backup, as I rate him at both centre and wing.



We've got some quality young threequarters now, plenty of potential.

All of these are 25 or under:

FB: Tomkins, Widdop, BJB
W: Briscoe, Hall, McGilavray, Charnley,
C: Watkins, Cudjoe, Shenton, Arundel

This doesn't include Atkins, Foster, Broughton, Owen, and Welham who I think are good but won't get to a level good enough for internation rugby.

I put Shenton in front of him due to the fact that I thought that he played impressively in last years 4 nations.

I put Arundel in front of him because I feel that he has more potential than Welham and will get to a higher standard.

I'm not calling Welham a bad player, if I thought that then I wouldn't mention him, but I think that he won't get to an international standard due to his suspect defense.

The lists towards the end that included players such as Watkins and Arundel was not the list of people that I thought should be in contention for this years internationals, but people who I think will feature for England over the coming years, due to being young (all 25 and under) and having great ability/potential.
