If we were at a point where really truly 'nobody cares' whether league players or anyone else is gay then this thread wouldn't even exist. As it is we're a long way from there, and it will - rather sadly - continue to help if high profile sportspeople (or other celebrities) come out in a public way.

All the gay people I've known have had huge problems at various times from straight people - including their own families. One guy I know has not even spoken to his father for over 20 years as his dad simply refuses to acknowledge him. Whilst this sort of rubbish continues - let alone violence and the rest targeting people for simply being gay - we should all applaud the Gareth Thomas' of the world.

There is usually an area in a City that is a Gay spot, in Sydney its Oxford street there where plenty of signs that straights were discouraged to the point where staff were commenting on "breeders" in a derogatory way.
Search for it it was in mainstream papers.
I used to work in many gay nightclubs and even the Gay Mardi Gras in Sydney.
It was not normal sexual behavior at all, Drums of Condoms and lube........

Shame the average Chav doesn't attend place where there are free jonnys. Might a few less teen pregnancies and ex servicemen might be able to get council housing!

Interstingly, Steve Price (Oz & Queensland forward) had for years to counter allegations that he was gay and often suffered provocation/sledging from opponents during games.
Steve is categorically not gay but it does show how people can behave towards gay people.

It also said that for years he was regarded a 'soft' by other NRL forwards and some coaches and that his toughness was doubted. How anybody who plays front row in the NRL and for Queensland and OZ can be regarded as soft is beyond me .

My daughter brought me the book back from her holiday in OZ. It's a decent read and he comes across as a really decent bloke.

By the age of 8 or 9 a child knows a lot of things. That it prefers jelly and ice cream to Christmas pudding, that it prefers Raleigh Choppers to racing bikes or Mousetrap to Ludo. One thing it does not [uknow[/u is that it is gay. If it does, it has been introduced to things a child of that age (and younger presumably, since an informed lifestyle choice of that nature would take some thinking about, I would imagine) should never have been introduced to.

Sorry to bring this up, but the decision on your sexuality at 8/9 - so pre sexual maturity does fit in with the theory (not mine, but one of a qualified psychologist, google it) that homosexuality is fixating on a confused experience early on in life.

I think very few people have a clear idea of their sexuality at 8/9, I have plenty of friends who were unclear in their early 20s.

So you did not feel attracted to girls at that age? you never saw them on tv and liked them? or played 'Kiss Tag' or thought that you wanted a Girl Friend or even wanted to get married (/play 'mums and dads' or other similar childish games)?

I had a girlfriend when i was nine. I was in love. I spent all my pocket money on a frog pencil sharpener for her when we visited Chester Zoo on a field trip in the summer. When she dumped me 3 week later i demanded the return of my frog. She threw it at me in the playground and slapped me in the face - Sue Ellen style. I remember thinking at the time - "what a complete b[iit[/ich". Replace the pencil sharpener with a diamond ring and you pretty much have an adult relationship (although we never used tongues and we wiped our mouths after kissing).

There were some girls I liked at that age and some I hated, what does that tell you? What I do know is that the concept of being gay or straight was not in my realm of consciousness it just did not figure at all, it was not an issue, and nor should it be for any 8 year old.

I have no proof that an 8 year old cannot know it is gay, but there are some things that are just common sense (does this really need to be explained?). I have no proof that child abuse is a bad thing but I know it is. I do not see how a sexually inactive child can know it is gay when it is not being driven by some inner desire or sexual preference, hence my "lifestyle choice" reference above.

I used to love playing conkers when I was 8. To be honest, nowadays I can take it or leave it. I did know I was going to be a train driver or an astonaut, didn't happen. What I am saying is that what I felt and thought at the age of 8 had little bearing on my career or even pastimes, so how on earth could I have known my sexual preference at that age?

If a child of 8 is aware of its sexual preference then as far as I am concerned it has been subject to abuse, mentally or physically but definately abused.

That is not to say that being gay is in some way wrong or preverted, I hope you have a long and happy life in a loving relationship, or shag your way round the world if you like, it makes no difference to me. But what I will not accept as right is the idea that a child of 8 or 9 can [uknow[/u it is gay (or straight or non of the above).

Anyway, as Starbug has pointed out this has come a long way from RL, if it was ever about RL in the first place.

Children do not experience sexual desires until the start of puberty, so it stands to reason that it is impossible to know if you are gay or not until that point. I certainly didn't like girls when I was 8 years old.
