As if "the top 10" is the yardstick for crapness! (Are you a big Joe Dolce fan?)
Any band that God (Neil Young) picks to play a series of gigs as his support is, objectively, not a "crap" band.
I'm no James fanatic but they are a fine band to watch, nowadays so crap that they most recently headlined on the Friday at Bestival last month - and got invariably [url=http://www.supajam.com/review/show/Camp-Bestival---James-1fine reviews.[/url. My lad was there and he says they were excellent and went down a storm. On that basis alone, seeing them for free at the GF is a bit of a coup, tbh.
I'm not that into The Smiths either but although they hardly ever troubled the "Top 10" I don't think many would cite that as evidence they're "crap".

| Def Leppard were made for the NFL. Inane chants in a stadium is right up their street. Awful band who promised so much in their early days. They should have got The Temperance Movement to do it for me. Good party band.

[iSit Down[/i made the top ten twice. Seven top ten albums, too.
As you say chart placings are no indicator of talent. Westlife had fourteen UK numbers one singles; The Who, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, REM all had none.

Yes it did.
It reached number two in April 1991 for three weeks. Held off number one by Chesney Hawkes. Also made number seven when re-issued in 1998.

ac/dc have had no top ten hit singles, yet almost everybody would love them to play at the GF (not that they would ever entertain anything like this - they have even turned down the superbowl half time show in the past)
btw Sit down might be James most successful song, but Laid or Sound i reckon are their best

| The teletubbies and wigfeild have top 10 hits, as does all the rubbish from x factor.
As for James, it's a matter of musical taste. Some people are very narrow and only like 80's leopard skin mimers, but you know they have their place.
Personally James is a pretty decent gig. It ain't the stones but certainly a step up on def leopard.
I can name zero def leopard songs off the top of my head, james I think 3, laid, she's a star and sit down.
Greenday would have been good, but hey, it's a RL match not a gig we are going to. The key for any opening group is have a recognizable sing along song. And they certainly have that in sit down.
Maybe next year the prodigy???

| Wow. Underwhelmed much? Good to see the RFL are doing their best to get the next generation of fans interested. Everyone only knows one song and it's a bloody terrible one.
James are hardly likely to get the place rocking. They're one step away from Prefab Sprout and Deacon Blue and they were "entertaining" us at Old Trafford in 2006.

Black Lace were the prematch at Cougars once. After the treatment the FC fans gave them, I suspect they passed on Old Trafford!
That game also featured 'Gwen and Andy'. I'd pay good money to see them do the prematch at OT.
And for what it's worth, I like 'James'. Good band, great songs.

Exactly! Saw them at a Uni gig with Pete Willis on guitar. They were excellent. He didn't fit the image they were after so had to go. Then they come out with Hello America. I think they made their intentions clear then.
