| Am I right in thinking that the good DR (sic) had given Nobby Noble until 5 pm on Friday to accept his offer of moving upstairs.
And who was the world famous biggest name in RL who was poised to take on the role if Nobby didn't accept.
Or was it only a dream ?

He has a PhD so is fully entitled to use that title.., in fact many medical 'doctors' only have Bachelors or Masters degree's, they were lended the title of 'doctor' back in the 19thC I believe

| To be fair to "Frombanginfront", he's showing off with the "sic" and at the same time showing his ignorance. The abbreviation is Dr (or Dr.). DR tends to be used as an abbreviation of Democratic Republic, Diagnostic Radiology or Dynamic Range.
But let's not allow that to prevent an ironic posture by someone who can use "sic".

Well I thought he was expressing his wholehearted support for Dual Registration. I assumed he wasn't trying to claim that Marwan referred to himself as "the Doctor" because I see no evidence that he does. People at the club seem to refer to him as Marwan.

| I am being a pedant again: his (jokey) twitter account is not how he refers to himself but is his twitter address. I do not call myself by the Terrace on which I live.
I cannot work out what some posters envy: that having started life as a refugee in one of the most volatile areas of the world, he self-improves to the academic heights of a Ph.D and the business heights of a rich businessman? Hmm.

The issue for me though is that he has a Phd in engineering. What relevance does that have to either being a rich businessman, a racehorse owner or the owner of one (or more!) RL clubs? Answer zero. So why use it at all - if he was a university lecturer whose job depended on it, then fair enough.
I am a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, a designation/title I'm quite proud of - and at least as difficult to obtain as a Phd - but I don't put FCA after my name every time it is used, only where it is relevant. Nothing at all to do with jealousy, simply feel that there is some bragging about it...

Maybe that's where you went wrong he uses his qualification and becomes a rich business man and racehorse owner and you didn't and became a wage slave.

Very few Phd's use the title Dr outside of academia it is seen as being a bit pretentious otherwise.
You might use it in a relevant enviroment such as work specifically related to say Engineering work.

| Well thank you all for your responses. the use of the term DR was firstly a typing error and second an ironic gesture into Wiggys and Baldys use of the term" the good Doctor."
I posed the question as an enquiry, but it seems that it has progressed to an debate of the use of the title Doctor. Quite rightly other than use within a medical setting, very few people use the term Doctor even in an academic settings, unless for publications of lectures.
But to continue, can I pose the question again can anyone enlighten us with the person who the Salford owner has called the biggest name in rugby league is waiting to take over.

I don't think that's being any more pedantic than pointing out that the @DrmarwanK account was set up recently by his daughter, after the @Marwan_Koukash name had been taken by someone else in an attempt at humour.
There is no evidence he refers to himself as "doctor", but WTF does it matter?

Back on topic.
A few names have been rumoured, but I deliberately didn't mention them because anything Marwan related tends to get the inhabitants of the RLFans sand pit all aerated. However, since you ask, the Manchester Evening News mentioned Tim Sheens, amongst others.
However, it seems clear that the man Marwan really wants as Director of Rugby is Brian Noble, hence his willingness to extend the deadline.

| "Doctor" is an academic title, derived from Latin, specifically the Latin verb "to teach" (docere)
It is a bit strange how many people have ised it into thinking it means a medical doctor, but in England in common usage that's where we are, however, a "real" doctor is a more difficult qualification than a medical doctor - a doctorate is the top academic qualification, whereas a medical doctor will normally be at the bottom, Bachelor, level.
I don't see any issue with a real doctor with a real doctorate using the title "doctor", but I suppose the issue revealed in this thread is that somehow a medical doctor is viewed in higher esteem by some than any other, real, doctorate, presumably because for some people a medical doctor has some near-mystical powers and so they think if anyone else calls themself a "doctor" they are trying to get the perceived kudos of people believing they are a medical doctor.
Ironic that"Doctor" isn't even that crash hot a moniker from a medical doctor's point of view: the accolade they aspire to is to actually lose the "doctor" and become a "Mr." I find it odd that nobody complains that top consultants are impersonating plain Joe Green by "pretending" to be a plain "Mr." when they are in fact a high end medical doctor. It would make about as much sense.

I thought it was surgeons rather than consultants that switched back to Mr.? Or Mrs/Ms/Miss. Snobbery is everywhere though. I've heard other senior clinicians refer to surgeons as meat technicians a couple of times. And FCA, pfft - just sums, innit?
Isn't it a bit weird that somebody like Sheens would be willing to wait on this as a reserve option?

Absolute gibberish. It may be your personal experience but it is very far from mine. I have worked with many PhDs both in and outside academia and come across very few who don't use their title in their professional lives.. The only person I knew to be a PhD who didn't use it professionally was a former partner of mine and she only did it because she preferred to be underestimated.
I'd accept it if you'd drawn the difference between the personal and professional life, but to say that PhDs don't use their titles is nonsensical. Many do, many don't.
It says nothing at all about a Koukash most of us only know through the press, and who himself became known because of his professional life, that he has become known to RL fans as "the doctor".
