| Regardless of what you think about him. It's quite sad for RL that the England RL coach has chosen to go and join the coaching staff of a league RU club. Not even a head coach or part of the international set up, just a bit player on the staff.

| ^^ It was in another thread about McNamara.
Sucks to see him go but looking at it from his POV it seems only logical. If he didn't get any offers in the NRL/NYC then going back to club football in the UK would've been a bit of a step down after coaching against the best of Aus and NZ. Going across to Union is a new challenge/clean slate for him.
In saying that, has anyone ever kept a record of all of the RL coaches that have moved to Union? Always seems funny to read about the supposed complexity of Union only for 3/4 of their coaches to have a background in RL...

Says more about where his stock is now, IMO - summed up in the other thread, really. If England had held on for those last few seconds in the semi-final there'd have have been an element of vindication for him. But they didn't and careers can turn on those fine margins. Now all his mis-steps and contentious decisions are put into sharp relief.
It could well be the only option he's got - the SL clubs are all staffed and ready to go. London apart, but it looks like they're going with Long. Everybody has to earn a crust somehow.

| Can't hold it against him personally, the bloke's got to make a living and keep an eye on the future. And if he does well, there's far more opportunities for him in RU.

| He was out of contract wasn't he? Therefore he is not the England RL coach, just an unemployed rugby coach.
The chances of a major (i.e. head coach) job in RL for him were probably close to zero, so an assistant role the only choice. Given his previous standing in RL, he may have seen going to be an assistant in RL as too much of a demeaning step down.

| If he could earn more in domestic RU as a forwards and skills coach than as national coach in RL, then we may need to worry...

| Same twaddle from the same people, If he was as bad as they think how did he get the job in the first place? & why do the NRL or union clubs want him? Good luck to him at least he will be apreciated there not abused by numpty's here.

Because he's clearly got a good agent?
Look at his coaching record; when he took over at Bradford they were the current champions. By the time he left they were barely in touching distance of the play offs.
And that's about all he's done in terms of RL coaching. Taken a championship team and turned them into also-rans.
England/GB, no noticeable improvement in overall performance. With there only being 3 real contenders for the WC, Semi-finals were a minimum expectation. TBH, the Final itself should have been the minimum expectation along with having actually beaten one of the other 2 top teams. Neither of those goals were achieved.
As to who's going to replace him? As a full time role, it's pointless. Not even half a dozen games a year? Flying backwards and forwards to Oz occasionally (and in these days of digital media and internet phone calls does a coach even need to leave the country to see a player perform?)
And you won't attract a top current coach as the job is on a hiding to nowhere, so you're likely to only attract the guys out looking for a big pay day or guys who's coaching experience and ability is 20 years out of date.

| So Bradford's demise had nothing to do with the breaking up of a quality side and replacement of stars with nobodies? It was all down to McNamara's poor coaching?
As for no improvement from England - please. That semi defeat was against an NZ side rated as one of their best ever. We lost by the smallest of margins in a game that will go down in history as one of the best ever RL internationals. Completely different to the last WC where we were blown out of the water.
I don't think McNamara is necessarily the best coach going round. He made some mistakes before and during the WC. I'm sure if he had his time again he'd do some things differently.
I have no problem with him being replaced if he wants to move on, or even if the RFL decide someone else could do a better job. I just find the OTT vitriol pointed in his direction completely ridiculous.

Well as head coach he was the one who said which players he wanted to bring in. So the filling the team with nobodies is a responsibility laid at his feet.
IMO he got the England job because there was no one else, at least no one better, that wanted the job

| roofaldo - what a load of rubbish. Are you seriously suggesting he decided to let star players go and believed their replacements were as good? He may have had input, but was obviously working within a budget.

| Well, well. So now the NRL champions think McNamara can improve the coaching in their organisation. There'll be some saliva-drenched keyboards from some of our coaching "experts" round here!

| It's players that win Championships, didn't see McNamara miss a vital conversion and a tackle at Wembley, or decide not to take a few steps back to kick out of hand to make more time so to execute it better, as Cooper Cronk does for Melbourne; I follow the Storm and we don't have a v.good pack who dominate, yes Cam Smith has influenced refs towards what to look out for in order to help his forwards, but Cronk plays with his head up and sometimes takes a few steps back if his forwards aren't on top, or the refs are leaving defences to move forward a little too early.
