| They do this as the clubs (or any merchant) are required to give a certain amount of any transaction to the card issuers (typically 1%)
It's a bit naughty passing this on to the consumers tho, Basically the club are maximising profit and reducing costs. If you take the personal aspect out of it, I'm sure you would all do the same in their shoes, however, as this is a fan based sport, you think they'd be a little fairer

| It's bloody con and they know that people will pay it although I suppose it's good business sense if you can squeeze a extra couple of quid out of people here and there all adds up I suppose

| Services charges annoy me most when they are multiplied by the number of tickets you're buying.

| It's a cross to bear, paying a charge when using a credit card but the blame lies solely with the banks. They not only charge you interest but they also deduct a fee from every single transaction made by card. This is taken directly from the clubs and it varies from a fixed charge for debit cards, to a percentage for credit cards.
The clubs really have no choice but to levy a fee. Most holiday companies do the same and in these troubled times, if retailers get across board agreement, then they could start to bring it in also.
So just remember, every time you buy a ticket by card, you are helping to pay the bankers their bonuses, whilst Cameron and co preach their all in together message.

| The cash point outside Headingley charges you what £1.50 or £1.85 or something like that, thats a pain when you are a few quid short for a ticket and have to go outside and pay to use a convenience.

I assumed it was the likes of Visa, Mastercard etc who charged the fee per transaction rather than the banks themselves? Isn't that why shops didnt used to accept (and some still don't) American Express cards even when with a British bank.'"
It is Visa, Mastercard etc that charge the seller the transaction fee. A few credit card providers take a part of that back (Barclaycard for one) and yes, Amex and Diners charge higher cuts, hence are accepted in less places.

Hopefully the retailers won't get an agreement, things are expensive enough already and cards are a convenient way to pay. It shouldn't be forgotten that items paid for by card require almost no other involvement from the retailer, it doesn't need carrying to the bank and can't be pilfered or snatched from the till afterwards, so it's not as though there are no advantages accruing. The customer pays anyway, either directly as a surcharge or as part of general 'overheads', at the end of the day if the retailer causes sufficient card payers to go elsewhere he loses out anyway. Not that there are many (if any) other choices about where you buy your season ticket!
