Just a little question to jog peoples minds, me and my mate were trying to think of the players still playing in super league now left from the innaugural year.

We can only think of three. anyone know anymore?

Wasn't Sean Long playing for Widnes in Div 1 in '96? (think he signed for Saints in '97).

I thought Robbie Paul was around in 96, i'm pretty sure Morley had made his debut by then

Robbie Paul - not played every season in SL, but was there in 1996.

Long was at Wigan in 96 - dont think he ever played in Super League though.

), and thought they'd signed he signed from Widnes for approx 70k.

He did sign from Widnes, for what was much needed money at the time! Cant give a date though...

he left Wigan for Widnes at the end of 1996 in a swap deal for Lee Hanson, he then signed for Saints in June 97 for £70k - shortly after we had sold Briers to Warrington for £80k.

How things could have been so different for all the players and clubs involved if all that hadnt happened. Would Long be at Warrington now, or still at Widnes? Briers would surely have a massive haul of medals and international caps had he stayed at Saints.

i didnt think long had played in every super league season, and paul johnson is definately someone i wouldnt have thought of.

start of 97 it was, wigan needed decent props to help farrell out as he was theonly one in their team that was giving them any decent go forward.

Looking down the list of 96 debutantes, apart from the guys who are still in SL, there's still only 13 players from that inaugural season who are still appearing in the lower leagues :
