Over the moon with it. Been chasing him since Crackaker left by all accounts. What a team next year and looks like Powell building a predominantly English spine/pivots.

| Cas have probably got some decent earners leaving next year - Junior Moors, Grant Millington, Jesé Sene-Lefao, Mike McMeeken and Jordan Rankin are all out of contract. There is no reason Evalds can’t easily fit into the club’s salary cap, if he has signed.
I’ve seen some suggestions that it’s a sideways move, but let’s be honest here - Cas have finished in the play-offs on a pretty consistent basis since 2014, and for the last three consecutive seasons. Salford might have had a good season in 2019, but their best players left and it’s obvious that they have declined pretty quickly.
It’s a god signing for Cas, and a spine of Evalds, Trueman, Richardson and McShane is good enough to compete for trophies.

Great young spine that, add in the likes of Watts, Shenton, Feki etc, you are right, big test fo Powell, who has so far failed to deliver a major trophy.
Where is Mcmeeken going?

McMeeken may well stay at Cas, but there have been rumours of a move to RU and also to Warrington as part of their recruitment to replace Murdoch-Masilla (and possibly Currie). Cas were also approached by Wigan about him before the 2019 season, so they may well still have an interest.
McMeeken and Cas are in quite a tricky situation. When he signed his current deal (2017) he was the best back-rower in the league and selected for the England team. Now, he's not at that level. I'd be surprised if Cas are willing to increase his salary based on the fact he's not showed the form that earned him the 2017 deal in 2018 or 2019. However, I'd also be surprised if McMeeken will accept a pay cut on his current salary (though perhaps he'll need to).

I like him, good player, still plenty of years left in him, maybe he needs a change of clubs, depending on his salary I'd have him at Hull to replace Jones (If he leaves)

There aren't many players who improve when they stop being coached by Powell, Orr and Sheridan though. Since 2014, I can think of very few players who have left Cas and done better at a different club.
I think McMeeken's salary is the biggest stumbling block for Cas and any other club. He's not as good now as he was in 2017, so who is going to pay him more money?

| Clark is better now than he was when he left Cas. Sneyd is also better now. It's too early to say how Gale will go, and Hardaker was already a MOS so we'll see if he can recover his form at Wigan. I doubt it though if they continue to play him in the centre.

Clark has done well, but I think it's debatable as to whether he has improved. He won the Man of Steel in 2014, but hasn't really been close to doing so again.
I hadn't really considered Sneyd as he was only ever on loan at Cas. I don't think he's as good as he would have been if he had been coached by Powell, though.
I think Hardaker is too complex a character to put too much down to coaching to be honest, though arguably his game was at its best under Powell in 2017.
I think my general point is that very few coaches get more out of players than Powell and his coaching team. Any player looking to reach their potential will seriously consider joining Cas. Whether it means they will win trophies remains to be seen.

In fairness, I don't think any of the 2014 squad went on to improve, either. Clark has never hit the same form that saw him with the Man of Steel. Hauraki did nothing. Huby did nothing. When we reached the cup final that year the story was all about a good team that were about to be broken up through the loss of their best players. In reality, the opposite thing happened - the players who left declined and the Castleford team improved.

I'd doubt Sneyd would have won two challenge cups, getting the man of the match in both of them.
Under Powell in 2014 he wasn't playing great so Powell took him off, in 2016 he didnt have a great half, but Radford stuck with him and he went on to win the cup for us.
Powell is a good coach, not as good as some make out though, he cant seem to get his team ready for big games and doesn't have a great record of bringing academy players through.

Yeah, that 2014 final was a strange one. Sneyd had gone well all year, but he was shocking that game. I think he’d been unwell in the lead up to the game, so that might have influenced Powell’s decision.
I like Sneyd as a player, but he’s not progressed as much as I thought he would. I thought he’d be an England international, but he has looked far from good enough for that apart from the odd game (and two challenge cup finals).

I'm not at all convinced sneyd was really motm in either game really. Houghton and Fonua were my shouts. Sneyd was sick himself with his performance in 2014 and we had a half back on the bench who actually improved us that day in 2014 (where we were underdogs)
I don't think people quite grasp the pits that Cas had fallen to pre Powell.
Powell took a club who had yoyoed relegation, at the the absolute best scraping 9th , at the worst getting beat by 50 every week to consistently been a top 5 side, for the first time in SL era reached 2 finals and topped the league during the regular season.
Context and all that.

Just fyi after a shakey first 12 months Clark has been outstanding for warrington, and was probably better in 2019 than his man of steel year.
Even though warrington stank out the place for most of the year he was still untouchable

Yes, I’m not disputing that Clark has done well. But I do think it’s debatable whether he has had a season better than 2014. I didn’t even see him nominated in the top 5 in 2019, so I’m not convinced he was better than in the year he won it.
