| Absolutely awesome to encounter the return of the true national team, Great Britain Lions.
Before you millenials whinge about England/same team/pointless or any other unfounded whinge, may I remind you that the GB brand is much stronger and recognizable to RL than the rather dullard England identity.
Personally, I don't see what the issue is, I mean NSW and Qld and other states feed into the Australian national team, so it's technically the same principle really.
OH, in other news, Brian Barwick has resigned too.
[urlhttps://philcaplan.wordpress.com/2018/07/30/rlif-board-makes-progress-on-international-calendar/[/url
Quote The Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) Board met over the weekend in Singapore to consider a wide range of items reflecting its leadership of rugby league globally.
Heading the agenda was progressing finalisation of a long range calendar of international matches and tournaments that would allow fans and the many other stakeholders of international rugby league to anticipate and plan their future.
The Board received submissions on the calendar from the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC), the New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL), the Rugby Football League (RFL), the Asia Pacific Rugby League Confederation (APRLC) and the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF), together with proposals from the RLIF executives.
Aside from locking down matches for the top ranking nations over the long term, the Board also ensured that the international calendar offered a platform for the challenger nations to compete against their more mature counterparts while at the same time paying regard to commercial considerations, player welfare and workload, and global balance.
The calendar centres on a suite of global events in four-year cycles, including Rugby League World Cups, 9s World Cups, European and Asia Pacific Confederation tournaments, Lions, Kangaroos and Kiwi Tours, and opportunities for developing nations.
The Board agreed to undertake consultation with stakeholders to finalise the details for the next two cycles to present to its planned World Rugby League Congress in the UK in November. Key elements of the calendar include:
Rugby League World Cup in 2021 and 2025
Kangaroos Tour to UK in 2020
Kiwi Tour to UK in 2018 and 2022
(GB) Lions tour to southern hemisphere in 2019 and 2024
9s World Cup in 2019 and 2023
2019 Championships for the Pacific nations in a mid and end of season format
2018 European Championship (and then at two-year intervals)
2018 Australia v New Zealand Test (annually to 2022)
2020 New Zealand fixture(s) in the southern hemisphere
The Board also agreed that World Cup qualifying competitions will expand organically and begin earlier due to the increase in aspiration from the growing membership.
‘There’s clearly still some detail to be finalised, but this is a fantastic announcement that has been a long time coming. It should give great heart and confidence to our international community,’ RLIF Chairman John Grant said.
‘It reflects the broad diversity that exists across our RLIF Member nations and we believe it can provide the certainty our fans, players and commercial stakeholders need to make long term commitments to international rugby league,’ he added.
The Board also dealt with the ongoing work of governance reform and agreed a range of Constitutional changes to be taken forward by the Governance Working Group to be put to Members for a consultation period in September and finally for adoption by Members in General Meeting in the UK in November. The Board indicated the final composition of the board would adopt best practice in independence and diversity and would include an appropriate mix of skills and expertise.
‘The Board had a very robust debate as it should on governance reform. The recommendations from the Working Group hit at the heart of how the Federation needs to govern a global sport in today’s fast changing environment,’ Mr Grant said.
‘The endorsement provided by the Board to the Working Group foreshadows a future that balances the obvious strength and contribution of the major nations and their associated professional leagues with the opportunity to grow the sport in the 65 nations in which it is played across the globe,’ he added.
The Board endorsed a proposal from RLIF CEO Nigel Wood to commence stakeholder engagement to review the process and criteria it applies to sanctioning international matches. This follows a commitment made by RLIF Chairman John Grant in June prior to the Denver Test between New Zealand and England. The review will be led by CEO Nigel Wood and will seek input from a broad range of stakeholders including National Federations, major leagues, professional and semi-professional clubs, players and their association representatives and industry experts. Its scope will include such as the strategic fit of matches within the international calendar, minimum standards, player welfare while on international duty, and insurance, and it will be informed by player data that was accumulated in and around the Denver Test.
‘This is a very significant piece of work that will provide consistency and benchmarks to which our nations must aspire to ensure international rugby league performs at the levels our players, clubs and fans expect,’ Nigel Wood said.
‘The Denver Test exposed all of us alike to this performance standard and has been a positive catalyst for this review,’ he added.
The Board also accepted the resignation of RFL Chairman Mr Brian Barwick. The Board thanked him for his four and a half years of service acknowledging an ongoing relationship with him in his new role as Chairman of Rugby League World Cup 2021.

Given Hummel’s attempt at the England kit (which is exactly the same as Denmark’s away kit) I hope that as GB are technically a different team, there will be a different manufacturer altogether.
Some of the GB gear produced by Ellis Rugby is first class, but I’m not sure if they have the capability to produce a genuine playing shirt and the number of replicas and other merchandise that would be required.

I assume it would also need some green on the shirt to represent Ireland, as it's the British and Irish Lions (or Great Britain and Irish Lions). Both names are used in the BBC article.

Hopefully we can then stay as GB and Ireland for when the Aussies come over in 2020, and again compete for The Ashes. I say that on the assumption that there will be three matches in each year, not just a single game in 2019.

Of course, we must consider the political correctness aspect mustn't we. Hmmm for decades there was no green in the GB jersey, likewise there is [ino[/i maroon or sky blue in the Roos jersey either or no colours of all France's provinces in the French flag or jersey....
Red/white/blue. The colours of this:
No green on the national flag. No red/white or blue on the Ireland flag, unless you are referring to the British part of Ireland, that being Northern Ireland Mr Muggins?
However, to support my opinion even further, I still see no green on the 'British Ireland' flag neither (well perhaps there is actually, a tiny emerald stone in the royal crown).
If Ireland want part of a Kangaroos Tour as well, perhaps RL Ireland could apply to the RLIF to host some warm up games against the Wolfhounds?

Will it be for The Ashes though? We'd need to play Australia three time for it to be The Ashes, right?
"A proposed Lions tour of the southern hemisphere by Great Britain is now expected to take place next year and include Tests against Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and possibly another Pacific nation."
Would we be able to play three times against Australia and then also against NZ, PNG and possibly one other? That would be six tests on the tour. Is that possible?

| We played 3 tests vs Australia in 1992 plus 1 vs PNG and 2 vs NZ.
In 1984 we played 3 vs Australia, 3 vs New Zealand and 1 vs PNG.
All those tests plus plenty of games versus midweek teams.
I doubt they'd do that now. Hopefully it will be a three test series versus the Aussies. Then play one each at PNG, NZ and Tonga. I doubt there will be any midweek tour matches as there used to be.
On the issue of Ireland the crest on the last GB jersey had Ireland represented. Brian Carney had no issues with it. He just chose not to sing the national anthem which is his right.

If it really is British & Irish lions they definitely should be wearing a jersey that represents Ireland onlongside GB.
God save the Queen should be dropped also. Shouldn't be an anthem for the GB & Irish players.
We will see what happens though. I predict the jerseys will have no representation of Ireland and God save the Queen will be the anthem.
So all in all this will be England simply dressed up as British & Irish Lions.

Great Britain is the one Island......the mainland. The British Isles is the pair of Islands including that partitioned into the Republic of Ireland and the occupied territory known as "Norn Iron" by the locals.
Currently the team would be 100% made up of players born in Great Britain, so no issues with either the badge or the shirt, but once the thriving Scottich and Irish domestic leagues pay dividends, then you will need to rethink it. The other lot were always The British Lions because Ireland was ruled by the tyrannical overlords in westminster, but one tey had earned their freedom, they became the B&I Lions.......but to a man, their fans simply cal them "The Lions"

That would be amazing. Do you think all the matches would be at the weekend, or would the matches against Tonga or PNG maybe involve a weakened team and played midweek? Either way, this for me would be better than the world cup. It would be a feast of RL.
Do you think the three match test series against Australia would be promoted as being for The Ashes? If so, surely we must play again as GB for The Ashes when Australia tour in 2020? We can't go back to being England in 2020 if that means not being able to compete again for The Ashes.

Get rid of of the British isles tagline and you can work with that. Southern island is not an extension of the British isles no matter how much people England still want it to be. Plenty of republicans in the North wouldn't accept that either.

Don't call it British and Irish lions if you have no desire to show any representation for Ireland. Playing in a GB shirt while still claiming to represent Ireland is laughable. It's not about going soft, it's understanding that ireland is not part of GB and the people in the RFL should know this.
The other code seem to be able to do this.

GB never reflected Ireland ever until around 2000 when the British Isles shield was placed onto the jersey alongside the Lion's head.
Before then for about 70 years GB represented.....errr GB!!
Does Ireland ever go out of it's way to consider it's former motherland, the UK?? No!
