| This always makes for interesting conversation when about football, so I just wondered how RL fans see things.
Would you prefer that England won the World Cup or your club team won the Grand Final/Challenge Cup? (not sure what the biggest prize is considered to be in club RL)
I don't have a club team so obviously it's England for me. To expand things a bit though, I'd maybe prefer to beat Australia in a three test series than win the World Cup.

Well, I was asking what the fans here think, rather than the players. Besides, I'm not sure that what you say is correct in all cases - not in RL anyway, because the international game isn't that good compared to other sports.
I'm sure playing in SOO would be a bigger honour than playing for Australia against the Cook Islands, for example.

I've seen Wigan win plenty in 30 years watching us but I've yet to see GB/England win anything of any real note.
Every time we get to finals/deciding tests against Australia I'm a deranged lunatic hoping it finally could be the moment but it never has been. One day I would love to think I'll be able to crack open a beer after a game where we've beaten the Aussies in a final or series decide and just watch the replay over and again.

| Country, country, country.
Even when I was going every week home and away and super league used to be good it was the same.
Nothing in the game has hurt as much as watching England fail again and again, particularly the semi in '13 as it feels like the chance to see us beat Australia has gone, it hasn't happened in my lifetime and the way things are going in the UK it may not ever again.

| You'll get 2 lots of responses for this.
Country for the fans of Wigan, Leeds, Saints who are used to watching their team win GF's.....
...... and Club for fans of ty teams like Salford (my team) and Wire who have no idea what GF success tastes like.
Unlike Football the vast majority of club rugby fans are passionate about the national team and there aren't as many club v country conflicts IMO.

| But I think that’s because we have our internationals at the end of the season.
If we had them mid-season and we had England players missing SL games or getting injured mid-season I think you’d see a lot more antipathy toward internationals.

| I'm 22 (born 1995). I grew up with success at Bradford, World Champions 3 times to now being in League 1. For selfish reasons I want to see my club move forward and become an SL team once again.
I was also lucky enough to watch GB beat the Aussies in 2006. I can't say I remember victories from 1995-2005. So the 2006 is etched into my memory and I loved it. I want nothing more than to beat the Aussies, just once. But I'd prefer an England/GB win a 3 Test series against them.

| Its Country for me because unlike with club rugby, the players are part of it, they belong. I'm a Warrington fan and whilst I enjoy any success we have, that enjoyment would be so much greater if they were all local lads.

I do support my country, but won't be bouncing around my living room dancing if they win the World Cup.
I enjoy it more than I did when we had the GB side containing only Saints/Leeds players.

| When did we last beat the Australians in a series or world cup knockout stage match? Was it the final in 1972? Quite incredible really.

Just out of interest, would you both feel the same way if the club you support had won jack all in the time you've been watching them?

Well Leeds only really started winning anything 15 years ago, won jack all in my life time up until that point and feelings have always been international glory over club. Nothing i would have liked more than seeing us take out a series or WC during the period 90-95 when we were very close.
Each to their own though and i can see where you are coming from.

I believe so. We have not even beaten the Aussies in a single game in 11 years.

Yes. I support the game first, the country second and Saints third. I felt that way before 1996 too, up until which time Saints' main role seemed to be to lose to Wigan in finals.

| Country by a hair, especially if we beat Australia in the final, it would be country by a distance if Sinfield were still captain, or if Leeds were not going into a potential transition period
Also, is it just me who feels less of a connection to the England team since we got an Aussie coach and put Heighington in the team?

I feel the same and my club haven’t exactly been successful in the 35 years I have been watching them. The ultimate for me would be to see England beat Australia in a World Cup Final with an English team (no silly heritage players) and an English coach.
