I saw an article in the Canberra Times shared on my Facebook feed earlier today regarding a Canadian side entering the Championship/League 1;
www.canberratimes.com.au/rugby-l ... obk7i.html
Based in Toronto and sharing facilities with Bradford Bulls when over here, Brian Noble (Team Manager) and Paul Rowley (Head Coach) are reportedly on board.
They'll play 4 games at Lamport Stadium (9,600capacity) in Toronto, with the rest of the games played over here.

| Well this has been rumoured for a long time now, Brian Noble was announced to be on board a couple of months back. They said that they will actually play games in blocks of four, with four at home, four away and so on so they will come over here for a month at a time. They also said that they will pay for the travel and accommodation costs of the league 1 teams that go over there. Like I say, been rumoured for a long time and pretty much confirmed that it was happening, just needed to be officially.

Why do you think that out of interest?
Reading what Yorksguy wrote (and thanks for posting, I didn't know some of that), the Canadian club look to be financing it, so it's at least financial viable.
The positives far outweigh the negatives surely?

| Would traveling teams over there take full squads? Part time players may not want to take a weeks holiday from work to play a game.

| Canadian Club in 2017? it's a damn fine whiskey that should be appreciated and enjoyed this year, this week, this month and right now dammit.
Jesus i'd forgotten how good that stuff is, i need to nip to tesco at lunch to get a bottle for watching the game tonight.

Depends on personal circumstances I suppose. I imagine most would love the chance to have a week/few days away with their team mates and play a game of RL in a great city like Toronto. In most cases with the fixtures coming out a few months prior, they'll have plenty of time to plan.
I've flown there a few times. It doesn't have to be a full week. It's an 8hr(ish) flight. Fly in on the Thursday, captains run on the Friday, play Saturday, home Sunday. Jet lag isn't a massive problem, but usually effects people more on the return journey (West to East), so will effect the Canadian team more than the English teams going over there.

| Stupid idea.... end of... Whoever came up with this nutcase idea wants banning from ever being around the sport for life. Makes no sense for any reason at all... apart from fulfilling somebody's idiotic fantasy that Rugby League will one day dominate the world.

| It would be interesting to see what sort of crowds they draw at home, I seem to think the national team pulls a decent amount in when they play their 3 test series against the USA.

The National side play at the same stadium, Toronto seemingly being the nerve centre of RL in Canada.
Going off Wikipedia (I know ), the last two home National team games vs USA and Jamaica in 2014 attracted 7,356 and 3,129.

| If it doesn't cost us anything then shy not give it a shot, some have said elsewhere to expand into Scotland, we tried Wales and it didnt go too well, don't see how Scotland would be any different.
If RL can get a foothold in Canada maybe it could make a bigger impact in the USA, if we want RL to really be taken seriously then these are the opportunities that we need to seize.
Only 4 games are to be played away, im sure there is an easy way to decide which teams get to go, and the players will only need to take a week off if that.

I wasn't being particularly serious. But to be fair, if someone is stumping up money to set a team up over here, they're not doing it because they want to play in the Championships are they?

Yeah as far as I know they are always getting 7,500 or so for the usa games. Shame they didn't qualify for world cup, would have been great publicity.

| Union has a league with clubs from Aus NZ and South Africa, so I think a Canadian club could be possible in super league, but not league 1. A load of league 1 teams lost to amateur clubs in the challenge cup a few weeks ago. It's hardly a league that's ready to go global.
If we are going down this silly they need to get promoted route, at least start them in championship, a year of winning easily and losing loads of money will achieve nothing.

Yeah and that union league is being expanded to have a team in Argentina and one in Japan as well.

| I like the idea. Hopefully a US team will follow suit. I think I read a while ago that they had an airline on board to back it, or was that Koukash and one of his crazy ideas?
Play their games on a Saturday evening, get the part-timers back in time for work on a Monday. But who wouldn't want to spend a couple of days off their annual leave in Toronto anyway? The away sides will love it as much as the fans.

I guess the biggest risk is the same situation as happened at Celtic Crusaders. The owner gets bored / runs out of money and pulls out leaving a load of contracts in place with players/coaches/airlines/hotels and the RFL having to bail out another club to the tune of a few millions.

Isn't there a similar risk at Saints with McManus? (and plenty of other SL clubs)
I agree with you by the way, but someone willing to invest in the sport and the potential this could have is worth the risk IMO.
