| I know the term sometimes get's banded around too often, but the lad is world class.
We have a player who you feel can break the line and go the length everytime he get's the ball. It makes us a very dangerous outfit. Everytime he get's the ball you feel the crowd lift, these are the type of players you pay money to see.
Brilliant news he's in super league for the next 3 years at least.

Yeah he's a thorn in our team (leeds) but frankly, the more players like this running round in super league being a thorn in our team, the better.

| I always reserved judgment of how good Tomkins really is until he performs on the international stage. Running round the entire Salford team wa sjust patheic tackling rather than worlc class play.
But he has ripped apart NZ, and the Aussie's couldn't handle him either. In fact i would go as far as sayin he's been the player of the tournament.

| Tomkins has looked the part in this 4 nations, he has looked the equal or better of his counterparts, dangerous going forward, safe at the back, the best teams in the world have struggled to contain him and struggled to go past him. That is great news for England.
Whats better is that he isnt the only one. Tomkins, Reed and Hall, Roby, Graham have all shown that they deserve the tag of 'world class' and the oldest of them is a 26 year old prop.

| I think Sam's in with a real chance of winning the Golden Boot this year. He's been a standout player in every game of the 4N so far, and if he can repeat that in the final against Australia, then he's got every chance of winning it.

| Looking at it objectively you would have to agree that he has been the standout player so far.
I hope I am saying the same thing after next Saturday vs the Aussies.

Hmmm... don't know how considering he's not allowed to speak to any RU or NRL club for 3 years, PLUS his contract uns until 2016.

| I've been made to eat dirt on Tomkins. I've bagged him relentlessly, branding him an overhyped myth who was shining against lackluster opposition and unable to do the same against Aus and NZ. But he's been on fire. He looks world class. I used to say he was a poor mans Josh Dugan but it now looks like Dugan is a poor mans Tomkins.
Great for the British game that he's stayed too. Even though I'd selfishly like to see him in the NRL.
In fact, only a few weeks ago I think I said I wouldn't want Tomkins at either of my teams (Bradford and NZ Warriors). Mainly because he's a - and in fairness, he still is - but he's a who I'd happily take at either team now.
I can't believe how wrong I was in my convictions about him.

Clueless post of the week award. Tompkins is simply a RL player with a RL brain. Anyone who actually understands RL will tell you he can play in any position on the park size permitting. Tomkins will eventually move up to be a world class No 6, at the moment he is enjoying the freedom being a FB gives him.
Just enjoy.

Im not sure thats the case. Which one of Marshall, Thurston, Lockyer, Inglis, Smith would you take him above? Would you say he is a better player than Slater? Cronk? Thats not even looking at forwards like Thaiday? Gallen? Ellis? What about wingers like Hall, Uate, Nightingale or Vatuvai, they probably dont play in as important position but does Tomkins do his role to a higher standard than they do theirs?
There seems to be a weird polemic thing about Tomkins where he is either an over-rated myth or the best player since Wally Lewis. There are people actually saying he is the best british player since Hanley, they are saying he is that player right now, not he could be that player, not that he has the potential to be but that he is. What the actual achievements of players like Morley and Ellis who have actually gone over to Australia and proved just how good they are? What about people like Peacock and Pryce who have done it year in, year out and have been ridiculously successful in SL? Rob Burrow has got two Harry Sunderland awards and was the first player ever to get a full complement of votes, he also has a man of the series award having lead an England side to a whitewash against NZ. Kevin Sinfield has done it all, and led leeds to success which should embarrass every player in SL.
We have had, and have many good players, im not sure why, only now, people are taking note of it. Ryan Hall has been doing what has been doing over the last 3 weeks, for the past 3 years. Jamie Peacock has been doing it for more than a decade. Roby has been probably the most consistent player in SL for 5 years, Graham an absolute machine for a simialar amount, Ellis was as good as he is now 3 years ago when he was playing for Leeds.
We have, for a very long time had some world class players, some who were probably if not the best, challenging for it. We just havent had enough of them. Now we seem to have enough to challenge, but lets not create supermen, because all that will happen is if England lose next week, which has a good chance of happening these same supermen will suddenly become myths again.
Tomkins has the potential to be the best fullback we have had in the professional era, Hall the potential to be the best winger, he, imo, has the potential to be better than Robinson or Offiah, Graham has the potential to be better than Webcke, and Roby better than Smith, Buderus or Cunningham, but we will have to wait until they are retired before we can really judge that.

my two pennies worth is that sam has more game changing potential than marshall, inglis and lockyer now... before the last two games i said he was the 3rd best full back in the world behind slater and stewart now he is the 2nd best as stewart is very good poacher. i don't think you can just say because he hasn't played for ten years he cant be counted as one of the best he is the 2nd most exciting player to watch in the world. Saying sam tomkins is one of the best in the world isn't having a dig at the likes of roby, graham, peacock and westwood they are all very very very good players in their positon but as far as xfactor none of them will step 4 players and go the full length.
I am very proud of this england squad and that includes all the players outside of the the wigan club

Interesting that you include Reed. He has played well but I wouldnt say he has been a stand out in the way the other guys you mention have. Those you mention however along with Briscoe and Widdop have all shown they are easily good enough at this level and yet are their careers have barely begun.

| Think that Sam is the sort of player who when he gets the ball does give you a lift,,a superb talent and i know that Wigan have given him a superb contract with clauses stating that he does not talk to any NRL or Union Teams for 3 years,,but we all know what contracts are worth in this day and age....

Im not criticising Tomkins at all, I'm criticising peoples reaction to him. Tomkins plays in a position where if he does well, it looks spectacular. But does that make him better than a player like Graham who, week in, week out makes masses of yards, masses of tackles and does his, less spectacular job, fantastically? Backs will always be looked at as having the 'x factor' but is Halls finishes over the past couple of games better than Grahams yardage? I guess what I am saying is to compare a player like Tomkins to a player like Graham is like comparing Brian Lara to Shane Warne.
And i think you have to do it for a long time to get listed amongst the very best, some players can have an outstanding couple of years but have a pretty average career. Clinton Toopi was probably among the top 2 or 3 centres in the world for a couple of years but over the course of his career he really wasnt of that level.

| People are right about Tomkins he's a right pain in the , deserves a slap, cheat, nasty piece of work.
On another note his shirt from Saturday is on Ebay so a mate of his can represent BARLA, they have to pay for themselves, in Dubia.
What a prick!!!

| I've been critical of Tomkins' attitude and demeanour in the past, but he's been outstanding in this tournament.
I say again - he looks a significantly better player when he cuts out the silly stuff and just plays.
