? super doper league is played in 3 countries.. nrl is played in 2 countries...super league has expanded more ?

NRL style? Australia only has one team outside of its RL heartlands in 100 years+. Not exactly a great expansion model to follow!

So Townsville, Melbourne and Auckland are all RL heartlands? I don't think so.

It pretty easy to see what your feelings are about the state of aussie rl and how it has expanded over the years, it's even easier to see how or when your attitude would change.

If I could expand the game anywhere? Well that's easy. I'd expand it into every school, collage and university in the UK.

That should help improve the game's exposure and provide an increase to the home-grown player pool

I'd disagree on that one , in NZ , Auckland has always been the primary RL area , still not as strong as union , but a heartland without doubt

I'd also query whether Townsville was ever devoid of rugby league. Surely North Queensland is as strong a rugby league area as can be.

It wasn't devoid of RL, but it was hardly an RL heartland before the cowboys were born.

We have far too many teams in the small northern towns, we need to make super league more european to bring in the big money and compete with onion on the international stage. The expansion id go for would be something like this: (with the weakest northern club dropping down to the championship every 3 years to make way for them)

Why?

Off the top of my head - gene miles, dale shearer, kerry boustead, greg dowling, martin bella - all stars of the game from North Queensland who played before the cowboys. Probably hundreds more. There's been RL in townsville since 1914, north queensland played the lions on pretty much every tour in the old days, beating GB once or twice. It's more of an RL heartland than _anywhere_ in England, that's for sure.

Or... we could take advantage of the open pathways offered to our sport since the fantastic events of 1995 and build from the bottom up. As another poster has said with a RL team based in every town, city, school, college and Universtity in the UK

If, as we all believe, we have the greatest game of all then we will see it grow now that the atificial restrictions have been removed

Professional teams should be built on demand for the sport not by parachuting teams into areas with no desire for the game

No, the idea of just throwing teams from places from non RL backgrounds and expecting it to work is taken from 1996.

A successful Super League team (10k crowds, financially sustainable) in somewhere like Edinburgh would probably take 50 years work. You can't just put something somewhere and expect it to work - that was the 1996 attitude and it's proven time after time not to work.

Only idiots would think that it could work when faced with all the evidence to the contrary.

I think Toulouse is the exception, as it has the base and the interest to support a SL club there.

YES Queensland and Auckland are both RL heartlands, strong RL playing and supporting areas for a hundred years! The ONLY EXPANSION team in the NRL that is not a heartland team is MELBOURNE.

It's certainly a better bet than Edinburgh or Dublin, but they're hardly bursting at the seems crowd figures-wise at the moment are they? It'd be nice for them to prove they can get more people through the gates over the next three years before throwing them into SL imo
