From reading the RL press and also these forums, it seems there is a great deal of concern amongst the supporters about the future sustainability of the club in its current guise. Whilst you seemingly have a very good side on the field, there does not appear to be a great source of revenue to back this up and I wondered if any of you have considered the idea of a supporters trust?
My name is Laura Harrison and I am the Rugby League Development Officer for Supporters Direct, the umbrella organisation for supporters trusts in the UK. Our aim is to see clubs returned to their community under sustainable models of ownership to hopefully put an end to the boom and bust model which is prevalent in most sports nowadays.
There are a number of ways a trust could work but all of them centre around the supporters gaining influence within the ranks of their professional clubs. After all, you pay money every year supporting your club but if the club is being badly run (which a number are) then that money is not being used in the best possible way to develop the club for the future.
Whilst the main bulk of our work centres around football, I hve been working for the past 13 months to develop supporters trusts within rugby league and I am now working to develop a partnership approach between clubs and their supporters rather than the more 'hostile' relationship that exists in football. Trusts can work with their club to develop crowds, local playing talent, community activities, playing facilities etc but need to ensure they receive something in return. Ideally we would like to see trusts holding shares in their clubs or having a director on the board but this return could also come in other forms.
Whilst I appreciate that it is difficult for clubs to compete when they don't have the 'sugar daddy' investment, it is also vital to remember that most of the clubs that take this route, would not survive if the sugar daddy decided to walk away and there is no reason cooperatively run clubs cannot be successful - Bramley Buffaloes are currently one of the most successful amateur clubs in the country whilst Hornets RL are currently enjoying an excellent season in only their second year as a trust owned club. Perhaps the most successful cooperatively run club of them all is Barcelona FC - a great example of what can be achieved.
If a trust sounds like something that may be of interest to you, please feel free to contact me on 07985 628215 or alternatively via email on Laura.Harrison@supporters-direct.org or you can visit our website at www.supporters-direct.org
Thanks, Laura

And the reason they have a problem is ?
Not enough supporters , so how exactly can a club with not enough supporters to ' support ' them , be any better run by supporters ?

| exactly why asking what peoples opinions are. Can you run a club on 300 supporters every home game? Club is currently funded by someone who has put a lot of money into the team but the vibes are that its sh*t or bust if we dont get promotion. Then again do how do we pay better wages for better players next season? Granted some bigger teams in the league if get promoted. When ur manager comes out and openly says he cant carry on with whats going on internally within the club things dont look good do they? Us supporters are like mushrooms - kept in the dark

Not very professional wording there from a "Rugby League Development Officer for Supporters Direct"

I think that'll be the wording from the poster rather than the officer.

| Looks like The poster has lifted a post made by Laura (who I know quite well), under her own log-in SD1 on the Blackpool forum.
Laura first got in touch with us at Bradford via these forums, in a similar way. a few months ago. The result is what you see in my signature. In the next few weeks, we will be applying the first of the funds we have raised to a specific purpose in support of the Bulls academy.
I think it might have helped had the poster explained what he was doing?

| There is quite a lot of initial work involved in setting up a Supporters' Trust. It's quite formal and properly regulated - it's an Industrial and Provident Society - like a co-op - and regulated by the FSA. You have to do things professionally and properly, otherwise the FSA will not register it. Fortunately, Supporters' Direct can hand-hold aspiring Trusts through the process, and provide some financial support too for the formation etc. Invaluable. They have a model set of rules (the equivalent of a limited company's memorandum and articles of association) which, if you follow closely in drawing up your own Trust's rules, should pass muster with the FSA.
There are quite a few Supporters' Trusts now established for RL clubs. Warrington's is the one to look at for SL clubs - I think Bulls are prob the second such trust for SL - but there are quite a few for non-SL clubs, where the need is often quite urgent. I'm sure Laura would be happy for genuinely-interested parties to contact her. And she can't help being a Huddersfield fan...

Yes i have recieved some information from her via email and it does look good. All supporters say something needs doing but now its time for them to step up to the plate. The way things look like they are going, it may be something we maybe not need to do but have to do. Im a leeds rhinos fan so dont think i will curry favour with you either then. I only get to local games in the northwest so i have followed the panthers(blackpool gladiators, lancashire lynx, chorley etc) for about 10 years.
thanks for the information

[/i
So let me get this right.
Say Barry McKenzie owns a footy club. I would want to run it as a business to make money. Thats the whole idea of having a business right?
So I would hire people who know what they are doing.
A coach who can coach.
A marketing manager who knows how to market the club.
Players who know how to play.
A catering team that know how to cater.
Physios that quite literally know their a r se from their elbow.
Yet suddenly some bright spark forms a 'Supporters trust' and along with other members suddenly start telling ME (the bloke who actually runs this club) how to run MY club??
Yeah right.
So what can Joe Blow on the terraces tell me about running a footy club?

| Barry - kindly bog off with your unhelpful vitriol.
The Bulls trust, like the Wire trust and no doubt some others too, is aimed primarily at raising funds to help with junior development. That is a different situation to some clubs in the lower divisions, where there is a crisis of ownership - usually a crisis of funding too - and the only way forward is through the supporters effectively owning or part-owning the club. There will be situations in between.
You talk a load of utter garbage so much of the time, but this time you excel yourself. I suggest you take the trouble to acquaint yourself with what this subject is actually about, and maybe take the trouble to consult with members of relevant trusts, before spouting yet more rubbish.

As usual you are wrong.
[i"There are a number of ways a trust could work but all of them centre around the supporters gaining influence within the ranks of their professional clubs. [/i
That quote was from the Original post... not mine.
[i'all of them centre around the supporters gaining influence within the ranks of their professional clubs'[/i
So that doesnt mean that these supporters trusts want to have a say in how the clubs are run then??
There are many ways clubs can raise money for junior development if they wish... a supporters trust is not the answer.
A supporters trust ends up as the tail wagging the dog.
That simply must not be allowed to happen.
