| We can only wait and see.
I think it is a very expensive gamble myself when the club needs a top class prop rather than somebody that will need to learn the game and take time doing it.
Let's hope he comes into the game though and heaps praise on it like Gareth Thomas has done.

| 6ft 4in, 18 stone and at 28 a little bit of time on his side
He has the potential to be a very good league player, for me he looks more dynamic and athletic than Scott Quinell who made a pretty good prop/second row. Every now and then, you see a player in Union who you think is far more suited to League and Powell is one for me... i.e. he likes to run and tackle!
Could be a very good signing for the Crusaders... some great publicity and a decent player as well

| If they can make some profit marketing him, maybe they can use the money to buy top-flight players? No-one else has tried this tactic before, but they bought Thomas, and then Sammut. Maybe now they sign this guy and sign another good 'un?

| If he makes it, it would show a clear pattern that Welsh Union players can make it in League, so a generation of players will have their options widened and the Welsh player pool will massively increase.

I would have thought that if you hate Union, you would welcome an international player leaving the sport and coming to League generating some nice publicity for the Crusaders?

| As an aside...when a Union player tries League they generally love the opportunities to run with the ball. What do League converts say they love about playing Union? And what do Union converts miss about playing Union?
I don't think I've ever heard or read anything that says....

| At this point in the Crusaders progress, the publicity from such signings is worth more and needed more than any playing ability.

| He played League up to the age of 14, that may not sound much but at least he will know the rules and the basics of rugby league and won't be starting from scratch

| the idea in Union was to stop players flying into rucks and just smashing people who are stuck in the middle and were a sitting duck.....which is fair enough
but to stop it in open play is just pathetic as is the fact you can no longer stamp on a cheap holding onto the ball at the bottom of a ruck. You have to leave it to the referee now......

What.. Union referees stamp on players who fail to release the ball?
Bit harsh?

| They play an inferior game.
I agree with you on a lot of things but having seen first hand players coming through both youth systems, in the UK the union blokes are better athletes. Well, better's the wrong word, they're different but a few could DEFINATELY make the transition. A lad I played alongside who played for union england schoolboys was better than almost everyone i saw in league at my year. In fact many coming through some league academies were VERY ordinary.

Was he a forward or a back? Some of the forward "Athletes," playing for England in union are a joke, tubs of lard, who can barely run a metre.
Truth is quite a lot of union players could make it in league, SL at least. We just underestimate them cause their sport is a bit ridiculous.
