Reminds me of Tom Selleck for some reason.

I played in the curtain raiser to a GB vs. France game in the early 90's. I remember standing in the tunnel at the end of the GB match and Kevin Ward was walking towards me... the scariest man I have ever seen in my life
(and that evening he put his hand through a window when on the p*ss... missed the next Cas game through 'injury picked up on International duty')

| Only one glaring error.
Not bad for the "best paper" in England.
Not.
Why not also have Stephen Jones make something up about rugby league like he normally does?

Not quite as cool as you make out then
Nothing to do with your coach playing an injured loose forward and your full backs in ability to stop a dwarf

| Joe Lydon sporting the look that never goes out of fashion there. RL top tucked into jeans.
Why does Hanley look like he's about to pirouette??

| There was no better import for mine than Ellery Hanley (a little biased as a Wigan fan), he killed the Winfield Cup, especially as a Tiger. Hanley had everything you wanted and was one of those rare 'back in the day' players that became a blueprint for the modern day rugby league player.

| Quick reality check
Ellery Hanley was a Superstar in Australia more for the Tigers than Wests although his star was dimmed when he was taken out of the equation in the Grand Final by Terry Lamb.
Andy Currier was a solid defensive Centre for the Tigers.
Offiah was a combination of a Star and a laughing stock, with the ball he had pace and scored tries but he was considered a liability in the rest of the game and a bit "soft".......
Waddell was just a regular Club player that most Aussies would not even remember.
Lydon was average and had a soft streak in him like Offiah.
Edwards barely got a first grade game 12 games, 5 starts 7 from the Bench including the last 6 games.
Schofield was probably the pick of the bunch that was consistently good.
Kevin Ward was probably the best forward since Reilly and he is really respected downunder.

| Ellery Hanly was one of those players who is a bit like Sammy Burgess, Chris Thorman, Gareth Eliss and any other British footy player you care to remember.
If you believed all the hype they would all be nailed on to be in the running for top try scorers and Dally M winners, no risk.
But when the red white and blue tinted sunnies come off and the cold light of day creeps over Bondi junction the sickening realisation kicks in that they really are all very VERY average players.
'The Black pearl' was made to look reasonable because of the quality of players in the Balmain side.
Terry Lamb showed him just how good he was, then it was hooroo to Ellery

| I didn't know trolling was an exercise where you stirred the pot but at the same lost all credibility Barry? Good trolls actually come across as having some clue about the game. You tend to fail here and lack this key attribute that is a must for all good trolls. Now you look as though you rate yourself a little judging by the tripe in your signature (twitter, gmail contacts)so I get it, you're a bit of an attention seeker. But mate, there is a fine line between being a troll or a tool.
Just so we are clear, Ellery Hanley: what was he, "reasonable" or "very, VERY average"? You argue the quality Tigers players made him look good, but it was 1989 when he won the Golden Boot award as a five-eight/lock for Wests. Hanley was every bit as good as any player of his era. There is no hype there. Just fact.

I saw more of Wardy's games for Cas than I missed, & I am struggling to remember him ever throwing a punch. He didn't need to, he did his talking with the ball.

Your opinion.
You are entitled to it.
My opinion is that Ellery Hanly was an average player made to look better than he was in a Balmain side with some exceptional talent.
Baa Baa finally showed the competition just how good he was.

To put Hanley in the same thread, let alone the same post, as Chris Thorman shows your lack of any RL knowledge.
Thats like putting Neil Henry and Brett Kenny on a par.
In fact I would hazard a guess you never saw Hanley play. It would at least give an excuse for your childish drivel.

| Hanley's consistent performances from the playoff in 1988 through to the GF that year were truly exceptional.
He won more than one game for Balmain in that period.
In fact he scored in most of those games as well, usually at crucial times.
He gave Balmain an attacking edge they were missing prior to his arrival and it showed.
Anyone describing him as "ordinary" or anything like it lacks a clue.
And I don't follow Wigan or Balmain.

Not.
