anyone who has watched rugby league since the 60's who is honest will say that alexander the great is the best scrum half of all time..................the only one who could come within a country mile of him was roger millward.

Roger was a different type of player & played mostly at stand-off..........i'd say Andy Gregory was the closest to a 'proper' scrum half.

Roger Millward for me but I was too young to see Murphy play. Seems a very long time since we had a decent creative scrum half who can control a game in the UK.

Shocking that Paul Deacon is yet to figure in this debate.

Gregory, Millward & Edwards all brilliant but Murph was better by some distance.

Don't know if this is limited to British players only, but Peter Sterling, Andrew Johns and Stacey Jones must be up there.

Slong is better than them all. Old rugby was marginally better than old football, which we all know to be rubbish.

If they were playing these days Chris Thorman would run rings around them all. The game is so much faster now and defences better. However as you cant really compare people from different generations you have to go with who was the best in their own time.

The RFL even changed the rules because of Murphys tactics:
He used to fire the ball into the scrum on its point......they changed it to a underhand feed.
He use to keep the scoreboard going with drop goals.....they reduced the value to 1 point.

Then in 1966 he stood offside all the game in the Challenge Cup final and that gave Saints a 70 / 30 possession split in the unlimited tackle game. Result the 4 tackle then the 6 tackle game

I wish I'd seen Murphy in his prime. When you hear old timers say he could pass like Andrew Johns (perhaps better), had blistering acceleration, was a tactical mastermind and possessed stainless steel cojones you can't help but salivate.

Only seen clips of the likes of Murphy, Millward etc but from what i've seen Murphy was a class above anyone i ever saw - Although Steve Kerry was class

Murphy by a mile, as someone posted earlier, you can't compare past and current players, but I'd bet his tactical brain would help him compete on todays field.




Sir Alex (NEVER forget that bit!) has to be one of the greatest players ever.
