He isn't a batsman looking where the fielders are. He will have eyes solely on the ball. If one of the players challenging him is offside then fair enough, but if he is stood 8 yards away minding his own business (as with Wednesday) then it won't be his fault if the fullback drops it.
Of course you're right that he is then still offside so can't pick it up, but it shouldn't stop someone who was onside from doing so.
