Quote ="MorePlaymakersNeeded"We had Tait, Offiah, Bateman, Devereux, Quinell, Bentley, Davies, Gibbs. Rugby union didn't stop them from making it in RL. We did get Gallagher and Stuart Evans on the flip side. Who's to say which camp this kid would end up in.'"
Union was still an "amateur" sport in those days and while we all know that the players did glean some reward for playing, at the time, League had more to offer as "a career".
Nowadays, Union has way more kudos and more "big games" and it's difficult to see why any player that was playing regular international Union would want to come accross, apart from the offer of big bucks, which, if Union wanted to match, they surely could.
Having said that, a lot of the youngsters grow up playing League over there and maybe there comes a point when they want to prove that they would have been "good enough" in the other code.
