Quote ="sally cinnamon"I think he's a good appointment and I am pleased he is back in rugby league. I also wouldn't mind marking him out as a coach for us to keep an eye on in a few years, as usually they do this type of job for a 4 year or so cycle before looking for a SL job.
I think the nature of this job means his reputation will take a dip during the job (at least with the fans/media) as that happens to everyone, including highly successful coaches like Noble, Smith and Bennett. The things that really irritate GB/England fans are: being continually second best to the Aussies, picking loads of Wigan players or players from big clubs, and playing spoiling/cynical rugby. These will probably be sticks the fans/media bash Wane with.
I think he's taking over at a difficult time where England RL talent is on a downswing, which makes the job even harder. The talent cupboard isn't as high as it was a few years ago when McNamara was there.
So it's a hiding to nothing job and one where he will likely struggle and get stick for it but I wouldn't judge him on this job and would be pretty happy if he became Wire coach. I'd put Daryl Powell and Brian McDermott in the same bracket.'"
His CV stands up with the best. 5 Grand Finals, 3 GF wins, Challenge Cup and WCC in his 7 years at Wigan. I note Kevin Sinfield has resigned his position as Head of Performance.
