While there is always rivalry between fans of different clubs and there are some genuine and serious reservations about the Toronto experiment (and I use "experiment" quite deliberately), you cant seriously blame the existing RL fans holding back the sport.
I didn't blame all of them. I'm holding to account those that do spread hate to anything new in the game though.
Why the hell would anyone want to get involved in our sport when so many fans have stuck the boot in to anything outside of the North.
They're not proper fans if they're not wanting Fev to win. Toronto should go back to their own country.
We're the opposite of inviting.
So yes, that holds the game back massively.
It takes so much work to start the game in other areas of the world. You look online, and all you get is hate. Why bother?
Quote ="wrencat1873"As I mentioned in an earlier post, Toronto have been superb in the way that they have sold RL to virgin RL fans and even allowing for "inflation" on their attendance numbers, someone over there has done a great job of selling the sport and for me, it is the ability to market and promote our sport which is lacking and very little to do with the fans that already watch the game over her.
If anything, our sport has relied to heavily on extracting more and more from the "same" group of fans and has abjectly failed to generate sufficient new interest in the game.
If you go back to the last world cup, where England performed pretty well.
The first international game following this was a mid week game v France at Leigh.
In just about any other sport, this fixture would have been sold out weeks in advance.
However, in RL, you have to be searching like hell to even know that these fixtures are taking place.
Myself and a group of lads were there from Wakefield but the attendance, for a full international was around 5000, which is just pitiful and the tickets were about £15 (I cant remember the exact figure).
The next international was at the Hull FC ground (KC/K Com) and again the crowd was poor.'"
Can't argue with any of that. It's beside the point though.
Quote ="wrencat1873"Until "we" can promote these fixtures (and others) to new fans, the game will remain on it's booty, it's got absolutely zip to do with "bile form some so called fans".'"
It's not one or the other. It's both.
We are a disorganised sport with a large section of uninviting fans.
Quote ="wrencat1873"You dont seem able to accept that not everyone buys into having N.American sides in SL, which is your prerogative.
I just dont agree with you.'"
No idea where you've got that from. People can have whatever opinion they like. They just don't need to spread hate. It doesn't make their point stronger, it makes their point weaker.
I don't buy the need for the comments made about Toronto just because they don't buy into it. Why can't they just say a reason... Much much like you just did?
Quote ="wrencat1873"NOBODY has "sold" the idea very well or, explained what the medium long term strategy is for developing the game over there.
If the "plan" is to, at some point, have a SL of, say 4, N. American sides, plus 2 French sides and only 6 UK sides in SL, I think that the game in the UK will die and despite having watched RL seriously for 30+ years, I would certainly walk away as a Trans Atlantic competition, with Leeds, Hull, Warrington, Wigan, Saints +1 has absolutely no appeal.'"
All fair arguments. Doesn't require the hate speeches posted against them by a large section of fans and the bandwagons they all join.
Quote ="wrencat1873"Sorry if that makes me bitter or full of bile but, that is MY opinion.'" '"
You are entitled to your opinion. Bitterness would be you lacking reasons behind it, which you have articulated well.
Unfortunately, too many (way too many) don't. It really does hold the game back. It's ok for us who were born and bred it, but try bringing someone from outside the game in to join the sh*tshow online about new clubs.

| Quote ="wrencat1873"I agree with you, up to a point.
As one off fixtures, there is something exciting about having something new to experience and if Toronto make it into SL, I will go over there for the first game between Toronto v Trinity.
Having been over there before, I know that Toronto is indeed a fine city and well worth a visit but, it's not a realistic option for the vast majority of RL supporters and if we go back a few pages, where I suggested that IF there was a "grand plan" to have say 4 N. American clubs, plus 2 French clubs in a 12 club SL, the game over here would be destroyed.
There does need to be more consideration given to the fans, unless of course, we are attending RL matches just to "pretty up" the terraces and if that's the case, Sky may as well use CGI.
If too many games become out of reach for the regular fans, necessarily, they will find something else to do on a Sunday afternoon (or whichever day is the norn), which will mean further erosion of already shrinking crowds.
It's hard enough now with ever changing fixture dates, to commit to all home games, although it's also noticeable that this doesnt affect fans of Catalan, Toulouse or Toronto.
The actual fans used to be the lifeblood of the sport but, we become ever more marginalised.
Anyway, let's hope that Fev can gain the win an then the problem remains something for the Championship supporters to suffer
'"
No fans = no game.
I've held a season ticket for years and made the fewest home matches last season because of the constant changing of fixtures, especially to mid-week.
With so many domestic clubs having their fixtures on a Friday (when the match is not televised) has ruled me out of attending lots of away fixtures too. I love my club but can't make most of the fixtures even though I'd love to go.
I've never been to Catalans, too difficult for me to get to in my circumstances. Would I go to Toronto? Very difficult to co-ordinate and afford.
The game is ultimately about the fans. It is not about clubs relying on away fans, it is about fans being able to follow their team. The way fixtures and locations are going in recent decades is really pushing the limits of what many of us can do. The less games you can make then the more risk there is of people stopping going altogether.
Short term v long term view.
As someone said the French and Canadian teams don't seem to have their home fixtures messed around much do they? Makes it easier for them to build up a returning supporter base.

Now now Wrenners, it's your turn to have them
.
TBH - As much as i wish Fev all the best, especially for doing so well in the play offs , I just want to see Toronto in SL just to see how it all transpires. If it does go well, then great, you can keep em.
'"
I've said so many times already that, both Toronto and Toulouse should have been "promoted" when we had the last restructuring, as you say, to see if it works.
Clearly, there was no appetite for this from the SL clubs, the governing body and most importantly from Sky and given that Toronto, apparently, are not going to take a slice of the Sky cake, it's just bewildering that as a sport, we didn't use the opportunity.
This not only would have allowed everyone to "test the water" but, also got rid of the ridiculous loop fixtures and if Sky were not willing to add 1/13th extra funding the, despite all the "increased investment and sponsorship opportunities" that we've been told about since Toronto "joined the party", it seems thet NOBODY actually believes this to be the case.
If the game had done this and the inclusion of these sides was something of a success then, it may have pave the way for other sides to join and if it had fallen on it's booty then, we could have reverted to 12 clubs or, replaced Toronto with Fev and Leigh in the top flight

| Toronto and always Toronto.
We will probably go to 14 teams from 2022 too meaning whoever goes down next season will probably find a quick route back anyway.
