The plaque on Selfridge's wall A bomb-damaged plaque marking a little-known piece of Manchester’s sporting history has been restored.
The plaque – commemorating the city’s role in the birth of rugby league – was one of the casualties of the IRA attack – 16 years ago today.
This morning, at 11.16am – the same time a van packed with explosives detonated in nearby Corporation Street on June 15 1996 – its replacement was being officially unveiled. The ceremony was being carried out by former Assistant Chief Constable Ian Seabridge, who oversaw the operation to evacuate the city centre.
