I'll be the first to complain if it's just a game of penalties.

brian smith and tim sheens are already complaining about it saying its going to turn RL in RU with all the penalties blown

not too fussed if a players foot doesnt touch the ball as long as they make a genuine effort

less penalties and refs keeping the whistle in their pockts is the aim

so why is he going against this style as refs boss?

They did it in our trial games over here. One game had 37 penalties. It must have worked because now the seasons started hardly any are being blown for. In the Rhinos game on Friday night the penalty count was 3-1. Trails are the best time to do it so the players and coaches know what to expect when the real stuff begins.

Every year the refs "crackdown" on one area of the game. Last year was the laughable 10 meter advantage rule, basically a free tackle, it changed the outcome of games and everyone and the media hated it. This year it looks like it is the play the ball area. I feel the refs need to "crackdown" to reinforce that THEY are in control, not the players.
