Quote ="JonM"That's complete nonsense. Crowd trouble at RL games was not remotely on a par with what happened in football in the 1970s or 80s. How many RL fans died in this violence? How many arrests were there? How many matches were attended by thousands of policemen? How many grounds introduced segregation and steel fences?
I've certainly seen plenty of nasty stuff inside and outside RL grounds, the Widnes/Warrington Premiership semi in 1988 being the most large-scale incident, but it was not even 1% of what was happening in football at the same time.'"
By `88 CCTV, and by some degree the police, had both started to get there act together and the Aciiiiiiiiid culture was just kicking in. But for no explanation that I can give, there was very little police presence at RL in the late 70`s early 80`s (81-85 was very active what I can remember). Cages at grounds meant nothing, a lot of trouble happened outside of grounds. I have personally seen scores of incidents, a lot of them nasty. And thankfully not that I know of nobody has been killed at a RL game And let`s hope it stays that way.
As for the most large scale I`ll throw in Maine Rd 89
Burndem Park 87
And by the way, just because you didn`t see it doesn`t mean it didn`t happen.
