I think a top eight should be reduced slightly, probably to a top 6.
But anyone who dislikes the ideas of a playoff system is a fool. Shorten the season by all means, although not drastically, but the playoff system is not what prevents teams from appearing sluggish in some games. That is a little known thing called "form." Every team in every sport has form dips at some point in the season.
Scrapping the system would mean creating an exciting means of deciding the championship, which generates a load of interest and big crowds as the best teams are pitted against each other in a pressurised environment, but then deciding to revert back to the "old" system, with the championship decided on who could beat the poorer teams in the division most often.
