having read the article i think both apply here.
and i echo your thoughts, also 'If you're not too busy taking pop bottles back for your 20p refund' seems to me to be a bit of stereotyped northerner bashing. bigoted and possibly also rather offensive.
not to mention he seems to have slipped in a dig at Ronnie O'Sullivan regarding cocaine use. which is very much out of order i feel.
considering he is the editor and the independent is ostensibly a 'proper' newspaper, thats p**s poor.

He takes a swipe at other sports also. He's talking about a launch of a low-grade RL competition; not a match - but a launch. As for padgett, well a rather try hard bit of fluff, i think it's right to expect a little more from a sports editor. It reads like a first effort from some junior hack.
