Sounds like Hall leaving has been coming for a while, and hopefully that were in talks with a player for when the Orford saga comes to an end.

| I agree that nowadays Langley would be more suited to prop than 13. We may still see some of him at 13, but we saw last season his best performances were in the second row and when we rest Lynch Potter may use him at prop.
I also expect Crossley to feature a bit more this year too, he's got 2 years to prove himself under Potter - a coach who is notoriously good at getting the best out of youngsters - so I hope he takes his chance.

whilst I agree with you long term, I expect Royston to get the role initially (assuming kearney is at fullback) with both Addy and Donaldson being given chances there as the season progresses and also as they develop physically. Don't think either is physically quite ready to take the role on a more permanent basis.
Certainly nice to be be able to discuss options for virtually every position for a chiange isnt it?.

I think Addy is ready to be honest, he was a decent size last year and should be even more physically ready after a good pre-season. I think it is only right that he gets the first shot at earning the shirt after a good debut season last year.
Royston is unproven at SL level and his favoured position is FB not LF. I'd be surprised if was being considered at 1st choice LF but like you say it's all about opinions. It will be interesting to see what option Potter goes for when he reveals his hand!

If Kearney isnt available for fullback, either due to playing in halves or injury, then I'd expect Royston to be the first in line for that slot. But if Kearney is at FB then hopefully Royston will slot in at LF (and thats no disrespect to Addy, just see him more as one for a year os so down the line). We've suffered badly last few years with not having players who can support breaks and Royston is excellent in that area. That said a few fax fans have said he hasnt got the ball handling skills for LF so guess we'll see as pre-season progresses how Potters thinking. One thing I'm pretty certain off is that Potter wont play favorites and we'll see a lot of squad rotation this year unless someone is really outstanding in aparticular position.

| I don't think the fact that Royston is a great support player is a strong enough reason to suggest he should be our 1st choice LF. I'd rather (where possible) that players are picked in their best positions. I remain to be convinced that Royston is a SL level 1st choice LF but I hope he proves he is SL quality in a few positions for us this coming season.

I wasn't saying that was the only thing he brought to the table, just that it was one of his strongest attributes. Watched a lot of fax last year as have a few mates who support them (should make sunday interesting ), and royston always impressed me when he was playing for them. Just my opinion that he would suit LF role well inshort term and allow likes of Addy and Donaldson to develop at their own pace for a while. Obviously over time the strongest player in the position would make it his own hopefully. Think Potter will swap things about quite a bit both in pre-season and also early part of season proper and let the players make their claims for positions on the pitch.

Royston still has to convince that he's super league standard in any position.

Agree and although he's been outstanding in the Championship he could yet struggle in the big league (I hope he doesn't mind).

I don't think anyone is suggesting he be picked because he's Australian are they?
Personally I really rate him based on the numerous times I've seen him play. No other reason. I agree top performances in the Co-Op League don't make a successful Super League player, but they are a bloody good basis for it. He's certainly more likely to make it at that level than 95% of others in that league.
I've not seen much of him at Centre or Loose Forward so don't know if he'd be any good in those positions, but he's certainly looked very very good at fullback.

| He's shown to be a terrific support player. I'm not expecting him to be making breaks or putting people through gaps in defences - I'm expecting him to back up other players and always be expecting the offload. We've needed somebody like this for years, hopefully he can do a job for us.

The bit where Furner says 'no NRL club can go anywhere near him' is quite funny'. I doubt even George Mimms would dare stand up in court and say, 'there's been absolutely no contact between Canberra and my client'.

Hasn't Furner been directly quoted in that self same paper talking about the talks between Canberra and Orford or is my memory going to pot? And I'm pretty certain when Mimis was on holiday in America he was also quoted as saying he was in frequent contact with Canberra.

Hall's departure does nothing to cause the Bulls to hurry it along, on the contrary, now that we have the overseas spot to register Herbert it reduces the pressure on the club to do a quick deal. Which is actually for the best; we want the [iright[/i ending (or, at least the best ending possible) not just any kind of closure on this.
