| Quote ="tigertot"Just been to Mumtaz for a 'business appointment'. The suits I was with think it's the business, I just don't feel comfortable in there. Immaculately clean, more like Harvey Nicks than a restaurant. It wasn't very busy, we were about the only whiteys in there, the others were Asian businessmen.
We had pops, pickle tray & mango lassi while we studies the menu (I refused any of the jam in the pickle so AP wouldn't ridicule me & stuck the lime & onion pickles). I had a veg biryani which was ok, but came with a raita rather than a sauce which was disappointing, about 6/10.
The suits had a dahl which looked good, a veg korma which looked good but would have been too sickly after a couple of mouthfulls & a chicken jalfrezi which loked like a bowlful of chicken chunks. The latter caused consternation as it wasn't on the menu & the waiter didn't know what the suit was ordering. They had rotis & naans with theirs. 2 used forks. None of the suits commented on their dishes. If I'd have paid I would have been disappointed.'"
They do the best mango lassi you'll ever taste though. It's so fresh and lovely!
My first ever curry was at that place just around the corner from the New Beehive - the one with the taxi rank upstairs. I can't remember what it was called but the curry was basically hot brown mush and I left most of it.
I'm much more clued up on curry now and my favourite place of all time is still the place that used to be over the road from the Frog & Toad - now long since gone. It got done for cockroaches which is a shame because it was lovely.
I think it's a solicitors now.

| Ended up at the International last night.
Was gonna try Mister Khan's but it was practically empty so didn't bother with that place.
Didn't have time to trek all the way to the Sweet Centre on Lumb Lane either, which was the original plan.
The Special Mixed Kebab starter at International was a real mixed bag. It was excellent, average and awful. The Seekh Kebab was excellent, the Chicken one was average and the Shami Kebab was awful (it was hard and stale and resembled something warmed up from the night before) - a disappointing 4/10 overall I'm afraid.
Me and a mate shared our Chicken Chana and Chicken Achari main dishes. The chick pea dish was pretty good - 8/10... the Achari dish was ok but had too much lime pickle in it - 5/10.
The Roti's rated a 7/10... they were good.
There was a sign on the door stating the establishment would become completely non-smoking in July. That's likely to influence my choice from July if I'm in and around Morley Street.

If you let that influence your choice your choices will be nil. All enclosed public spaces will be non-smoking from July. Besides, I've stood outide restaraunts that allow smoking with you cos we're polite, clean living lads.

| Me, ridlerbull and his mum just ate in the Karachi after watching the Fartown/Saints game.
I'll comment on my own, went for the Chicken Masala as I usually do in there and it was spot on, the chicken itself was very nice.
Special mention to my little salad side for Puig Aubert - I didn't have any problems with my cucumber, in fact it was quite nice!!

| Well I decided to brave the Kashmir tonight, I went for a mix kebab starter and a Chicken Rogan Josh main and to be honest I was pretty happy with both, my mate wasn't too keen on his Lamb Madras though.

There is an upstairs and it has windows
Once had to sit upstairs there as below was chocka. That scouse bint who used to be in Emmerdale (Malandra Burrows) was troughing down a curry on the table next to me. You'd have thought she could have afforded Mumtaz PH or Aagrah's... tight get.

| I went to the Silver Jubilee on Oak Lane earlier this evening. This is a place I haven't been to since the early 90's. I always rated the food there very highly back then so I was very optimistic that I wouldn't be disappointed. Unfortunately, that optimism was way off the mark
Decided to go veggie for the starter and ordered a Mixed Bhaji which was supposed to consist of a mixture of Onion, Potato and Mushroom Bhaji. They either ran out of mushrooms or simply forgot to supply any on my plate. The Onion Bhaji was OK but no more than that... similar in style to what you get at the Karachi but not nearly as good. As for the Potato Bhaji, they were just like potato scallops you can get from any fish and chip shop but smaller... no spices and no taste at all. I should have asked for some salt and vinegar and tomato sauce to go with them FFS! The side salad that came with the starter was good though... a healthy portion of freshly sliced cucumber, onions and tomatoes, but it's saying a lot when you enjoyed the salad items far more than the actual starters. Very disappointing, and I am being generous in scoring the Mixed Bhaji with 3/10.
For the main course, I ordered their Special Chicken with Spinach and my mate ordered a straight Chicken Balti. Mine wasn't a total disaster... it was tasty-ish, quite dry and not overburdened with too much *OO... but nothing to write home about. The quality of the chicken was so-and-so... some pieces of *HROB's and *HJGL's included at no extra charge... and the chicken was definitely boiled then just added to the sauce. I had a taste of my mate's Balti... this dish was even more disappointing than mine and reminded me of a bog-standard curry from Morrisons you would warm up at home in the microwave. It was served in a small, spotlessly clean and shiny karahi dish but the contents hadn't been cooked in there... just poured in. I'd rate my Chicken/Spinach at no more than 4/10 and my mates Balti at 3/10.
I ordered two Roti's with mine and my mate ordered a Naan. The Roti's were huge and I could only eat one of them but they weren't very good at all. Too thick, too doughey and undercooked on the inside. The Naan was a complete joke... it was just another Roti but bigger. I'd have been happier with warmed-up Pitta Bread in the microwave... yeah, it was that bad.
It has occurred to me that the standard of food there might be as good as it was in the early 90's when I last visited the place and liked it, but the general quality of curries these days have improved markedly since back in those days. Clearly the Silver Jubilee hasn't moved on.......... nah, bollox!.......... I'm being too generous. The place has gone backwards and it's nowhere near as good as I remember it. It was awful and I won't be going there again.
The only thing I can say is that if I was given a choice between eating a curry there and eating at that gawd damn awful place on Anlaby Rd in Hull, whatever it's called, I'd choose the Silver Jubilee. But that's hardly a glowing recommendation is it? It's not even as good as the Westgate and that was pretty naff.
My advice is to avoid the Silver Jubilee. I should have taken the hint when I walked through the doors anyway... it was empty and it remained empty, apart from me and my mate. Wish I'd gone to the smaller place next door (Shiraz) instead now, though there weren't many customers in there either... half a dozen maybe.
[uKEY[/u:
[i*OO = Orange Oil
*HJGL's = Horrid Jelly Gristle Lumps.
*HROB's = Horrid Rubbery Offal Bits.[/i

| Went to Omar's last week (not my choice).
Despite my half cut status, I can honestly say that it was crap. I had some chilli chicken balti thing, but it was one of the worst bradford curries I've had in ages. Lack of taste and packed full of tomato. Naan was crap too.
Visited the International later in the week and was much much better with their Chicken Tikka & Keema Balti. First time I've had that dish at the International and it was top quality.
Going to Akbars on Thursday night for a birthday, but I fully expect that to be as cracking as ever.

There were a couple of slips, yeah
One of them was very much drink induced though. Why else would anyone decide to go to Omar's.... (The two curries I've ever had there have been terrible)

Quite!
I mean [i'Whitey'[/i Akbars... FFS
So many wonderful choices in Bradford... why would anyone go to Akbars if they're from Bradford?
I could understand that choice if someone was utterly clueless and from Leeds.

| Can call it all you like, but IMO it's still just as nice as the International or the Punjab. Perfectly happy with any of the three personally. Usually I'd plump for the other two purely on being closer and cheaper, but it's not my choice on Thursday, and I've never had a bad curry at Akbars yet. At least theirs do taste, unlike the crap I had at Omars last Wednesday night.
Not tried Omar Khan's yet, but judging by some of the reviews, I may have to do that next time it's my choice.

I don't understand the Omar's obsession either. Distinctly average imo.

Well Omar Khan's is the more expensive of the two, I've never been in.
Omars has usually been fine whenever I've been in (though, as Bullseye says, there seems to be issues with a new chef) and up until recently its been the place I'd usually go, haven't been in for a few weeks though as I've gravitated back to the Karachi.

| Omar's is the cheaper, less whitey version.
Omar Khan's is licensed and has cutlery.
Food wise Omar's is pretty good when the old chef is on and it's quiet. When it's busy the quality can nosedive a bit.
Omar Khan's is pretty average typical fare. You can better stuff more cheaply at a few other places.
