| Mathers was a great player at Leeds and although at full back played as an extra stand off. He'd be a fantastic addition to the Bulls squad. I can't believe the Bulls fans are deriding him as average given what you presently have in the backs.
He could easily step in and play half back and make you a better team than you are at present and I am not so convinced that Kearney is a better full back.
Plus, he has bucketfuls of one thing your team is desperately missing, enthusiasm.

Kearney was a regular full-back in the NRL and was selected for country origin aswell. Mathers can't even get the England no.1 shirt, Kearney is a much better player.
Kearney at stand-off or SH isn't as good, maybe you're confusing Kearney at FB with Kearney in the halves??

| I don't think Mathers is a poor player but I just question whether he would add enough to our squad at stand off? I haven't seen a great deal of him at 6 but the last thing we need is another 'fill in' stand off who doesn't have a very good kicking game. With limited funds, we cannot afford anymore utility players playing out of their favoured positions.

| Plenty of enthusiasm out there tonight vs Wire but I agree Mathers would be a useful no6 for us.

He's miles behind Kearney at Full back.
That said we need a six but for the salary he'd command we could get a better six so it's a no for me.

Watching him in his junior days at Leeds IMO he was always the better 6 than Danny boy.

| IMO he'd do a very similar job to Karl Pratt. Some else we all detested till he arrived at the club and look at the job he did for us.

| Well like I say, I've not seen a great deal of him at 6 but I'll trust peoples judgements who have. If he could be our 1st choice 6 then perhaps he's worth a 2 year deal because he is a decent player. Can he kick the ball though?

| To play what position?
Mathers wouldn't stay on at Warrington because he wanted to be first choice. Why would he want to be 2nd in line to Brent Webb?
Edit : Okay, you may have meant Leeds Carnegie

| Unbelieveable thread this!
I really cannot believe some Bulls fans have labelled Mathers average and because of that don't want him!!
Firstly Mathers is far from average, he was outstanding in a Leeds jersey and many of the Leeds fans we're sad to see him go albeit we ended up getting Mr Webb. Mathers does seem to have brought some stupid errors into his game which is disappointing. However with a good coach behind him that will back him by giving him the No1 jersey he really could be a fantastic addition to your squad...
As goes for average take a look at your whole squad ffs!! Minus Beaver, Lynch and Orford your squad has average written all over it.

Kearney, Scruton, Langley & L'Estrange are way above average.
Our young players like Whitehead and Donaldson have the potential to be way above average too.
I know I shouldn't be biting, but how can you comment when you have Ian "Mr. Average" Kirke in your squad ?

firstly we have too many FB's to sign another, and the best in SL behind Webb and Hodgeson.
second, Mathers looked good in a strong Leeds team and okay in a strong Wire team - but he looked crap at Wigan and would be for us.
so to be honest mate the last bit of your post contradicts the first part - if we have to many average players (which, i agree with) why would we sign another?
we need a couple of class three-quaters before we can think about becoming a good side.

Probably the most perceptive post about our squad as a whole!
The skill levels in our squad are nothing compared to the top teams.
If we perform at 100%, then we can compete, but if our levels drop to 90% then Wigan, Sts, Warrington, Leeds only have to perform at 80% to beat us.
Thats what happened on Saturday. Plenty of effort, bags of potential, but still not good enough to Beat Warrington on an off day.

| If we were to sign Mathers I'd hope it was to play stand off. However depending on how Southernwood progresses and Orford recovers I'd hang fire. I'd say a centre or winger of some quality would be a priority.

Perhaps they can comment given that "Mr Average" is likely on a lower scale salary and continually does a job when asked, hence his Grand Final winners rings. Anyone who shows the commitment to catch an "international" Paul Sykes from behind given 15 metres to make up is doing something right mentally and physically. I'm sure he doesn't purport to be Sam Thaiday.
With reference to the topic title, Mathers would be a great addition to the squad and is arguably on a par with Kearney and critically, is English. Far, far superior to the outstandingly average Halley, Sykes and Reardon who have all masqueraded around as fake fullbacks for far too long. That "tread water" Halley continues to think he is a full back in a mystery that even the cast of Scooby Doo couldn't solve.
