Me & the tigress did the canal to Gargrave on our tandem last year. She refused to get on it on the return until we got near Skipton.

Good news! I will have to pay it a visit the next time I am down.
I ended up in there the day after the WCC v Wests all those years ago. I was invited along by a chap I was at the game with, for a "quick pint" and ended up leaving about 8 hours later, completely plastered, destination "the chippy across the way that vbfg might visit someday".
In my defence it was only about £1.29 a pint of their guest ales and it really was too good to turn down.
Sweet!

I was a victim of that classic schoolboy prank of having my chair whipped away when in the process of sitting down in there once.
The velocity that I hit the floor was unfathomable and I immediately was worried that I had simply missed the seat and that everyone thought I was blootered. (I wasn't).
The relief of realising that I had just been a figure of ridicule for a rather busy boozer was strangely comforting.
A bit more of that "tomfoolery" would bring the punters in.
A great place. Sad to hear it may be boarded up the next time I am down.

Ah well. Nothing ventured eh? Clearly you are a man of culture!
However, you are right. They ARE lovely people in there. I was in there back in September and they obviously mentioned my accent. They thought I was having them on when I told them that I always visit when I am down. I am sure that that was the reason I got a double helping of curry sauce and an extra can of Dr Pepper TBH.

| I was in Scotland a few years back, it was shortly after the riots, and was in a paper shop in Dufftown. It was early-ish and the papers were late, so conversations started between the newsagent and various customers. My English accent stood out a little [the shop got lots of tourists, though not many at 0630 and he asked where I was from and looked a bit...I can only call it quizzical, when I told him. So I said, "it's in Yorkshire, about 40 miles east of Manchester" [I [i:1174bw5unever[/i:1174bw5u mention the 'L' word "do you know it"?
He looked at me and said, "Aye...aye, I've [i:1174bw5useen[/i on telly too, and hadn't actually seen, or heard, anything first hand but, he did seem a bit disbelieving! Forever tainted, I suppose. Mind you, the 'L' place had riots too, but it doesn't seem to be mentioned as often - maybe because it doesn't fit the usual narrative.

TBF Bulliac, if I am talking to people up here about a trip to Bradford, most people (sadly) associate it more with the fire at VP rather than the riots. Over the years it tends to have been forgotten about, especially with the likes of Tottenham a couple of years back.
In fairness, the bloke in Dufftown is probably still spooked about the Jacobite uprising in the 1700's and the Highland Clearances. He will no doubt be suspicious of everyone.

| A former partner of mine lived up in Cumbria. Almost Scotland, actually. Gretna was half a mile down the road.
Not long after she moved in we went to a local garden centre. I kid you not, the woman behind the counter said "You must be Chris. Don't you come up from Bradford?" Weird. Tree hadn't spoken to any locals that point really, but they all knew who I was, where I was from and where I worked.
I did not meet one single person in all that time who did not assume I was white flight. I even met someone with family in this area who thought I'd laugh along with him when he wondered aloud if he should stop when he encountered "the other sort" crossing the road. A Sikh friend of hers came to visit once and I went into town to a shop with her daughter. Traffic actually stopped just so people could gawp.
I was leaving my job and moving up there. Mysteriously, I never did.
(Longtown is funny though. It was a model town like Saltaire. The guy built the mill on one side of the river and the town on the other. Then he built a bridge and charged everyone a toll to go to work for him. No wonder they're all 2@s).

| You know, far be it for me to heap praise on the lad but FA's comedy thread has actually warped into a right enjoyable read for me. Best on here in ages.
It is amazing how refreshing it is when the depression of the RL is avoided.
(my football team are set for the drop too. Been a shocker of a year!)

Let's hope not.
It does concern me though to think that people are so narrow minded that their assumption that because you are from Bradford then it is open season on the bigotted comments.
I would say that it is quite the opposite in all honesty. People growing up in culturally diverse areas, to me, are more tolerant as it is just an everyday part of life whereas in areas of less immigrancy, people tend to have more of an objection.
Sadly there are knuckle scrapers in all walks of life who cannot see the wood for the trees.
That said, racism is not the biggest problem up here. It is the west coast based sectarian bollox that tarnishes us (well, them and the Nationalists). It will be worse on Sunday when the bigot brothers meet in the cup semi final.

| It's a complex thing. That part of Cumbria is whiter than white. There's more diversity in Workington of all places than there is there. Even Carlisle is like 99.9% white, or at least feels like it. Gay bashers too, even if their castle is pink.
Parts of Bradford are like it too. Descend into one of the estates like Holme Wood and it'll be all white, or at least it was when I lived on the edge of it. Similarly there are parts that are all Asian. Never the twain shall meet, or at least not soon. But then you also get Manningham Road and Great Horton Road (where I lived for most of my time here), top and bottom ends of Leeds Road (but not really the bit in between) and it's everything Bradford should and can be.

I remember once driving through Manchester on my way to Maine Road, home of MCFC before the move. Smack bang in the middle of Moss Side. Jeez that was a culture shock. One turning to the right off a nice road with universities on it and I thought I was in the middle of Compton. A white face was not the best of disguises in that neck of the woods.
I must confess, rightly or wrongly, that I felt very intimidated indeed.
Similarly, the first time I was in Bradford I took a right turn of the main road in from the Keighley side (the A580???). It was like driving in a different country altogether.
Then again, it was still infinitely better than Fagley.....

| Went to a gig in Manchester on my own once. My friends aren't cool enough for Hawkwind's Captain Pugwash years.
I wondered around Moss Side afterwards without realising where I was. It was still famous for being pretty shooty then but it doesn't have quite the reputation now that it did then.
Another no go area into which I went without problems. It's not like I'm averse to trouble and aggro, as you may be aware, but I never seem to find it in places where it's supposed to be guaranteed.

I am unsure if this is the right thing to say but I find this post absolutely hilarious! Brilliantly written.
From Justin Timberlake to Hawkwind in 4 pages. There really is an element of genius about that.

That is quite an insult Bulliac. Edinburgh? Dear me. I was in Pafos, Cyprus, in February and was accused by three different people of coming from Edinburgh. I have been called some things in my time (deservedly so in some cases) but that was a low blow.
Don't get me wrong, Edinburgh is a wonderful city, a world-class city and I visit it regularly. The only thing wrong with the place, is, people from Edinburgh.

| Heh. When I was in the US last I made a point of wearing my Australian RL shirt wherever I went. I do that in France too.
Someone needs to get the blame and it sure as hell isn't going to be us.

Once when I was overseas I met a couple of Americans who asked me where I was from. When I told them Scotland, they asked if "that was part of England."
So I asked them where they were from to get them to say "USA".
"Oh really?" I replied. "Is that a part of Canada?"
The look of utter bemusement was a treat.

I realise that public criticism of the moderators is frowned upon, but, if you do that then you are a bawbag.
