Am I dreaming things up or did Gale play loose forward in his early career? Maybe Gale 13, Sammut 7 and Herbert 6 would be the best combination although Gales defence at 13 would be thrown massively into question. Let Ah Van go, would much rather have Ainscough and Raynor on our wings with genuine pace & the actual position they have played all career instead of being a "utility" back! Have Crookes or Platt as back up there!

I think the phrase was more "best that we've got" than anything else and that none of the presumed replacements were any better. Thats not the same as saying he's a good organiser. He has started to show abit more of it laterly but no I agree he's not brilliant at it.

It doesn't no, think Potter will be kicking himself though that we could of had a much better half back in Witt. Much prefer to have Summat off quota than on it. Frees up space for another back or a monster of a forward from aus with this new 3/4 apparently on his way.

do we really want or expect to sign ANOTHER half back, or would you be happy to let someone go. Whilst briggs is the obvious choice, there may be mileage in BJ going back to Wakey. At the time, they could nt offer him the long term deal as there future was in doubt, but that is no longer the case.

I think we need to remember that a halfback's prime purpose is to direct the team around, create opportunities etc not be a tackling machine. Plenty of teams carry poor defenders yet manage to defend well. Look at Catalans this year with Dureau who's a bit of a turnstile. In the past Paul Deacon was no great shakes at defence too.

While Herbert's improved a bit of late he's still been unconvincing when the pressure's on. IMO he's a bit slow and doesn't impose himself much. However whether Gale and Sammut offer more is open to debate. Both are quicker at least which should help us be less predictable in the middle which is a real issue. Whether they can perform under pressure we'll have to see.

As for the organising role, we don't have anyone very good at that as it is so it's not like we're losing much in Herbert in that regard.

Not if you listen to Mat, Roofy and Aaron. They'd have you believe Herbert could organise a pi$h up in a brewery if they could.

Get your facts right mick. I've never said Herberts the greatest organiser in the world. What I've said he's the best out of jeffries,gale,sammut and briggs. Entirely different statement which I stand by. In terms of organising the side either jeffries or gale is a downgrade IMO, maybe not a massive one but a downgrade never the less.

Whether improving the quality and pace at standoff is enough to offset that remains to be seen, although I'd be a lot happier if we could either get witt/hanbury on board to take scrum half role OR a ball playing loose in the style of sinfield. We have no on field general at the moment.

IF we could get sammut at standoff, witt/hanbury at scrum half with gale and jeffries as backup then our halves would look a lot stronger. Briggs can go on loan for a year to see whether its worth taking up the option on his 3rd year. We only have sammut and jeffries for a year at moment so we need to keep developing briggs in the background.

Im just winding you up Mat. He's no better organiser than BJ, Gale or Sammut though. He's poor. Fair enough he's got a good number of assists but so has Willie Manu. Fact is this Mat, and you cant agrue with it, The Bradford Bulls have looked poorly organised this year on the attackand Marc Herbert as the half back has an awful lot to answer for it.

neither gale or sammut are an improvement in organising sense. I'll bookmark this post and remind you next year when your complaining about the lack of direction.
