Why not? He can lace his own - I've seen him - and what would be so hard about lacing somebody else's? Lacing boots isn't rocket science.

John Woods great bloke , great Rugby player, best all round player I've ever seen , and like me he is a Butts Bridger.

Was he missing and widely thought to be dead for one entire season before reappearing under contrived and barely explained circumstances? Cos that sounds more like Gaskell.

His days at Leigh were numbered when they appointed him player-coach and he had to pay for the inevitable failure of the team. The only time I saw him come second best, he was playing at Hilton Park against Bradford. He was up against Ellery Hanley, (now there's another fantastic player) who I think scored a hat trick and made Woody look very ordinary - in fact I think he ended up getting sin-binned?!

However, I never remember Woody as a blond. Of course, that could have been one of the stipulations of moving East, over the Pennines - you lot aren't that far off Essex, are you?

Long blond hair???? Are you sure you're not mixing him up with Ken Kelly?? He was a great player but long blond hair he did not have.

Well, it was lighter coloured than mine - though admittedly not as 'blond' as Ken Kelly..

Bobby Ewing stepped out of the shower one morning and found that the last couple of seasons had in fact all just been a bad dream.

I agree Gaskell is similar to Woods in some ways but nowhere near as good.

I have a vague memory of Woods kicking at goal from 70m+ goal in c86/87 - think he ended up missing, but height and distance were there.....

....Or has too many beers eroded my memory?!

I was there for that game. Woods played for Leigh, we were drawing 15 all, the hooter had gone and they got a penalty. He kicked it from the centre spot to win the game. What are the chances of that happening again... oh hang on

There was another game, at Odsal in the last season or so of 3 point tries, when we had it 'won', six points up on Leigh and only a minute left.

We conceded a try which Woods goaled, leaving us 1 point to the good and barely sufficient time left for us to to kick off. Of course, we kicked it out on the full, leaving Woods as much time as he needed to nail the penalty from halfway...

John Woods-What a player.Sorry,but Gaskell isn't in the same league imo.I still have a programme of the only game Woods and Hanley played in the same Northern team.just after we had signed Woods and just befor Hanley left for Wigan.One of my favourite players Woods.

At least, in those days they just made something up when they hadn't a clue what went on, and everyone just moaned and got on with it. More or less like the championship, to be right!

I can remember Terry Price with a drop goal from around his own 25 at the old Craven Park in Hull. Mind, he [idid[/i have a boot on him.

Aye, my grandad told me about Terry. He had such a boot on him he actually got a gig as a field-goal kicker in the NRL. It didn't really work out, but for an NRL scout to actually get him signed up tells you a lot. They were't short of kickers in American colleges.

When Terry was playing the rule was if you kicked the ball dead it was always a drop out so you got the ball back. Terry could kick the ball dead behind the oppositions dead ball line from almost his own tryline. Consequently we were always getting the ball back. Because of Terry doing this the rule was altered to what it is now, a tap restart on the 20 metre line.

Have to say that when you had a kicker like Terry Price the old rule was brilliant....can't understand why they changed it!
