Reminds me of a curry AP and I partook of in Anlaby Road, Hull (yes, I know, but hindsight is a wonderful thing). Veg curry that consisted of frozen mixed vegetables in a blandly spiced tomato soup accompanied by a naan bread smothered with a thick layer of pureed raw garlic. Strange thing was it was packed and the locals all seemed to love it.
It didn't taste any better when it headed northward to it's porcelain casket at about 3am.

Almost reminiscent of the infamous Commonwealth on Manor Row in Bradford. I went there in the late 80's before I moved here. It was one of those places that never saw a customer until the clubs turned out, it was then heaving for a couple of hours & worked on the theory that punters with no food in front of them could cause a problem. So as soon as you sat down they came to take your order, you had to pay in advance, they went to get your change & came with your starter. Before you had finished that they were stood next to you with your main course; which was always a variation on the same brown water with either tinned veg thrown on, or bits of gristle. If, as i did, you ordered a 'byriani' it came with a yellow rubber mat on top, aka an egg. Before you finished they were waiting to clear your table & get you out.

If you come out of Forster Square station up the stairs, cross the road on the peilcan crossing, it's immediately in front of you on the left. It's on the same row as a seedy pole dancing type of establishment.
A mate's cousin owned the bar in the basement of the old building adjoining the station, called something like Manor Vaults. We all came over from Donny, went to the bar, then to the Commonwealth, then slept on the floor of the Vaults. Luxury.

Never went in myself, but always noticed it in various new guises whenever I walked up to Valley Parade.
DoesnĀ“t sound like I missed out on much.

Similar sort of deal to the one Tigertot was talking about. I think they rely exclusively on the nightclub over the road for their business. I've only been in that club once too, I suspect the two incidents occurred on the same night.

That's also an accurate summary of [iThe Islamabad[/i which was opposite the main entrance to Leeds University around the mid-80's.

I think it was called [iChakwal[/i, next door to that Real Ale off-licence at Woodhouse. [iNafees[/i was a couple of doors further down and also sold warmed-up pitta breads and curries consisting in the main of tomato powder. Nafees saving grace was that it's Onion Bhaji's were quite nice... similar to those served up at the Karachi in Bradford.
And if you ever wanted a curry with only a couple of small pieces of chicken or 'meat' (whatever that was!) at most, and consisting primarily of gristle, smothered in half a pint of oily gravy, there was always the [iKaghan Valley[/i at Headingley (now called Tariqs?) which was utterly disgusting fare.
Didn't care too much at the time though as I was usually p1ssed anyway.

| Went to Omars yesterday but it was shut. Arrived there about 4:40pm after the England Academy/Aussie Schoolboy international at Odsal. Omars didn't open until 5pm and it was that cold I wasn't hanging around for 20 mins for it to open so went to Karachi instead.
There appears to have been a price-hike at Karachi and they are now handing out menus instead of just the one on the wall. A number of Karachi Special main dishes have appeared (all around Ā£6 each) including Rick Stein's favourite (they spell his name wrong on the menu BTW).
I didn't order any of the special dishes and had a Chicken Bhuna instead - 6/10 I'd say - not bad, and chicken quality better than usual. Onion Bhaji about the same score but not quite as good - 5.5/10.

It was the one I was thinking of. Tiny little place. I once bought a bottle of white wine there when ed as its all they'd sell as take out (before the real ale place I think - or it was shut). They charged about a fiver and when I looked at the label it was Dutch wine.
I was ill the last time I went to Tariqs (though it could have been the ale) and went to it in the Kaghan Valley incarnation too, along with the equally bad Rajput kebab house near woodies.

| Visited one of my favorite restaurants last night, the Samarkand in Heckmondwike, a small unlicensed restaurant above a gents hairdressers, take your own beer/wine and cash only payment...this is a hidden gem of a place, well worth a trip out for those of you who live a little nearer to Bradford centre....opens at 5.45pm closed mondays.
I would advise booking a table if visiting at weekends as this place is very popular.
poppadoms......8/10 standard fare nice pickles.
Shami kebabs......8/10 no sizzling platter..served with salad.
Onion bahji.......8/10 round and flat..very tasty....served with salad.
Lamb tikka......9/10 awesome flavour...very lean meat.
Chicken madras....9/10 very good.
Lamb vindaloo......10/10 very hot but tasty.plenty meat.
Chicken massala 9/10 very good.
3 x Garlic naan 10/10 awesome.
1 coke.
service 9/10
Once served everyone gets a visit from the owner Sammi,a top guy been at this resaurant 25 years this year.

Aye, the 30th should be fine by me, sounds like a place that should be sampled.
