What do you define as being a grafter? I don't think there is any question about the work and effort the current coaching team are putting in but for whatever reason the results don't seem to be coming to us. Will McDermott bring something to the party that we haven't had for the last few seasons or will it be a case of more of the same?

Jimmy Lowes was in charge of what was, on paper, one of the strongest side in SL but struggled. What did Smith bring to Wire that Jimmy didn't?

The difference between a top team and an average team often seems to be down to what a coach can coax out of of the players, whether they're superstars or average joes. A top coach can make a a decent team into winners. An average coach can turn a top team into an indifferent one.

I suppose it depends on what the clubs SL ambition is for the next few years (if it has any) and who it things would do the best job of developing and bringing through the nippers. Perfect package would be someone who can get the first team playing to their ability whilst introducing the young players. But I guess that's what every SL club wants.

Although it's frustrating as a fan... how tight is the security within the club about the appointment?! Talk about playing their cards close to their chests! So far there has been discussions about Millward, Potter, Lowes, McDermott... but it all seems to be guesswork and speculation, no matter how educated the guesses are or how much insider knowledge people claim

Well it does look like either McDermott or Potter. Looking at what Quins fans have to say about McDermott on their forum I hope it's Potter!

Up until about 2/3 of the way through last season the appointment of McDermott was looking to be a very astute choice by London, and he seemed to be building up a very good reputation as a coach on the back of a successful stint as an assistant at Leeds - if he'd got the Bradford job back then I'd have been delighted with the appointment.

I'm not really sure what's happened since then, but results since have obviously been terrible. Personally I believe that, unless a coach is really successful, then 3 years/seasons in the job at the same place is about the limit because players are going to stop listening to your message eventually and it's probably beneficial from both points of view that a change is then made, in Superleague the job down in London must leave a coach feel like he'd banging his head against a brick wall in so many ways that I can understand if it starts to take it's toll and leave them a bit jaded eventually.

McDermott is still popular with a lot of the fan-base and has a reasonable record in developing young players, I think it's a decent appointment but just hope he isn't, initially, given too long a contract.

What happened to the likes of Jason Taylor and other such higher profile names. We'll probably end up with the coach we can afford rather than the coach we need. Probably speaks more about our finances than our ambition!

If Macca's youth set up is as good as we are made to believe,no matter who the coach is and as long as they can integrate these youngsters into 1st team rugby then maybe we will have a good foundation to build upon....

Ultimately, I'm sure if finances were not an issue the club would go for the very best coach money could buy. Or I'd hope they would! But if we were to go for a coach we could not afford, what else would people cut to pay for it?

Those folk on here who slate the club for lack of "ambition" presumably do not appreciate the financial circumstances, and the fact that the club CANNOT overspend - no sugar daddy or bank to run to, no reserves tucked away. Spend too much in one area and you have to immediately cut somewhere else. The club is anyway probably having to cut back yet again because of the poor gates. Do we have 1000 or more people willing to pay £100 or more annually into a "get a more expensive coach fund"?

Folk also need to remember that Sterling has gone down the bog against the Aussie and Kiwi dollars in the last year or so, and the UK tax regime is suddenly less attractive to overseas guys than it was. That will of itself have a big bearing on how much an antipodean coach costs.
