Unless we can somehow offload some of unwanted players who are on 2-year contracts, we will have a squad of at least 30

Guess it depends on the injuries we pick up, which is unquantifiable, to be fair. I'd be happy with 26 or 7, and definitely no players that Jimmy just isn't going to play. As I said earlier, we seem to be recruiting with a view to probably still being in the championship next year, which does leave us in limbo to a fair old extent and the uncertainty definitely doesn't help.

| I hope that the Bulls start a new reserve team like a number of the SL teams are planning to. If that is the case then we could accommodate a bigger squad but still keep them first team ready.

| We've had a massive squad this year, which I think in part was over compensation for last year where we barely had enough players to put out a 17 every week. More focus on quality over quantity is needed for next year, I feel, regardless of what division we are playing in

| I can't even begin to comprehend how difficult it must be to try and arrange a playing squad when you have no idea what league you'll be playing in, no idea how much money you'll have to spend and no way of giving anyone any guarantees. It's an absolute nightmare scenario, and it's not something I envy steve ferres for having to do at all.

| That's a good point, does anyone have a link to the 'prize money and distribution of central funds please'? What would be the difference between the amounts receieved by ourselves and say, Wakey and Salford or is it purely based on where you finish in the middle 8's?
Lowes likes young players and he and is maybe of the view that being at the bottom of SL and the top of Championship does not represent a huge financial differential and is about no more than 2 or 3 players, on the basis that even in the event of promotion to SL, the type and number of players that could realistically see us challenge for 7th or 8th place are not available to us anyway.

Think that's spot on.
Given that around four or five of this season's squad never even got a game, it's pretty obvious that, given the understandable recruiting dilemma at the end of [ilast[/i year, a few of our recruits were maybe brought in on the evidence of youtube videos, rather than actually having been seen in action. Hopefully that can be avoided this time round.

| Ben Evans another rumoured to be on his way out. Would definitely like to see him back.
Can't see GoB still being at Warington next year. Would hope we have some sort of first refusal on him.

| With us signing him last year then letting him go back to Wire you would think we would stand a good chance, that's if Jimmy thinks we need a proper scrum half, obviously

| If it's true about these 4 getting released, what about Joel Monaghan, we could do with a new winger. It's been a while since we signed one

| I would take Ben Evans back in an instant, I'll be amazed if it's true that they are releasing him.
GoB goes without saying. If I was Lowes I would have been in regular contact with Tony Smith throughout the year to keep tabs on Gareth's situation.

| I'd have both Gareth O'Brien and Ben Evans. Would be surprised if they released Evans but maybe it's to do with his injuries? He's had some poor luck with injuries in the last 3 years.

To be right, it was Jimmy who signed him in the first place, the bad bit is when he gave backword and it looked like we were up the creek, we gave Harry Siejka a two year deal. It certainly won't be easy to get him fixed elsewhere, unless we get a bit of the old Harry over the next few games. That probably won't happen for two reasons; firstly, it hasn't even remotely looked like happening, and secondly I can't see Danny Addy being replaced at this stage.
If we do for G O'B, I guess it will depend on how the finances and cap stack up.

| Several players have said they have both championship and super league contracts, but I wonder if some only have championship contracts, and hence might be contractless if we do get promoted. I'm not sure I'd have given a contract extensible to super league on the strength of a show reel.
The corollary is that it might not be in the interests of some players for us to be promoted, which could explain why some ostensibly fit players have not been used at the business end of the season.

| Does anybody know the answer to this, I don't
We know when a team is relegated( us last season) all the players contracts are null and void because they are Super League contracts and new contracts for the championship need to be signed. We know some players probably have 2 contracts in place for next season and it remains to be seen which one they will be on, but i wonder if anybody's contract will be null and void if we go up, as in they only have a championship one
Yes it seems odd but it's only like the super league one been null and void on relegation working the other way round

| I guess what my point is, there may be some squad members who signed at the end of last season on 2 year deals, and been as polite as possible, would not be wanted if we got back in super league

I would be surprised if a player chose to sign under those circumstances, but I can't see why it wouldn't be possible.

Which was my point from earlier in the thread. Yes, it might be nice for a player to get a wage without having to play, but that's very short term thinking. If you're not playing, you're off the radar of other clubs which might mean having to take a bigger pay cut than you might like if you wait out your current deal before switching clubs.
Better that the club is honest with players who's services are no longer required and do everything they can to facilitate their exit to a new club.
As for the whole 2 contract thing, I assumed that something like that had to be in place before the start of the year given the players we signed who were willing to drop down to play Championship rugby league. It's likely that players such as Gaskell haven't been on a massive wage this year but have been promised a big pay jump if they are successful in getting the club promoted. But I doubt there's players at the club with 2 contracts who aren't going to get that SL contract activated should we go up.

| I think we, as a club, were fairly lucky in one extent at the end of last season and that is that there were no promoted clubs taking our place in SL. If there had been, then it's more than likely that a few of our better players who opted to stay [i:1s5tkw7dmight,[/i around 50 players in the two squads, there was never any chance that the majority of those could ever be fitted into the rosters of a league with two fewer clubs. This, in part at least, has to be how we managed to hold on to as many SL experienced players as we did.
I suspect the next team to come down, if indeed there is one under this system, may not be as fortunate, particularly given the large increases in competition money for SL clubs.

| I heard yesterday that Henry, Shaw, Brook, Walker and Matt Ryan have been told there is no offer and to explore other options.
Brook- we know has joined Keithley
Walker- looks set to retire
Shaw- seems to be on his way to Hull
Henry- ?
Ryan- ?
No mention to the likes of Samir, Daives, Etu, Ulgiua who seem to have disappeared from the face of the earth.
Also Tim Smith doesn't look to be staying at Wakefield... Could he be worth an attempt to sign? 29 so couple more years whilst Oacar comes on a bit maybe?
