If we look at it with your example then I would say that, although dinner is usually an evening meal, if hot food is eaten as a meal between 12pm and 2pm then it can be referred to as dinner. But, if cold food is eaten during the same period of time then the meal should be called "lunch"

These rules, however, do not apply when the food in question is bought from any type of fast food outlet, nor do they apply if the cold food being eaten is a full salad. The salad however must be a full meal salad and not one of the little ones sold in plastic tubs from supermarkets etc as those salads fall under the definition of lunch.

I believe a tea party is not a meal. It's a mid morning or mid afternoon gathering at which hot drinks and cold food is served.

Therefore, if it comes under any definition it comes in closer to lunch than it comes to dinner

I thought it was chips not chimps, & you only have chips for your dinner, chips at tea is frowned upon.

As I now get up at the ungodly hour of 5.45 by 8.00 I'm starving again so have a second breakfast. I think brunch is a lovely woody word but far too American for my liking. Afternoon tea in Bettys is heaven, I'm too tight to pay over £12 for it, but I have treated tigercub a couple of times for her birthdays.
