Menzies going! - bugger.

For those who can spin this one - good luck. Beaver may be older than most, and being such a prolific try scorer in the NRL does not guarantee a contract now, but a possible repetition of Morrison-gate with Menzies would leave a sour taste.
On top of that - Salford gazzumping us because 'they are going places' is absolutely ridiculous (the only place they are going is likely the Championship in 18 months time, reckon that some of the players going there want little weight of expectation).
I will always support the Bulls home and away regardless of who is signed / not signed, and am looking forward to seeing us kick the Saints tomorrow, and yet this one must have us all baffled. Arguments for a quota spot and salary saving are fine, but the club's silence on any signings (leaked rumours at least) do not settle the nerves.

Isn't this also part of Potter having a direct say in recruitment? If he's been given a clear remit to rebuild the Bulls, then letting a player go who maybe has one more year in them might be a very good move if it allows more balance in your squad, and if it signals an intent to move away from signing older Aussies/Kiwis. I support anything that suggests the Bulls are going to come back as a real force.

Also agree re all of Salford's signings. There's no guarantee they'll be any better next year than this. Its not as if they've signed a bunch of current Aussie internationals.

Nothing against Menzies BTW - he's a fine player. He'll undoubtedly get a one-year deal elsewhere.

Adey serious question here, Will these "recession figures" have to be audited by the club?

If so will they show up on the yearly balance sheet when published, or can they be covered up so that the true figures involved are ever revealed?

Although they're not signing superstars, they are definitely improving the squad.

Patten is a massive improvement on Fitzpatrick. Anderson & Wild better than the likes of Sibbit & Littler. Palea'aesina better than Leuluai etc. etc.

They're hardly going to be up there challenging for the Grand Final, but they should be a fair bit better next year.

And this poor current squad is only 3 points behind Bradford. Or possibly 1 after this weekend.
Though this present Salford investment does have all the classic hallmarks of boom & a very big bust shortly after.

I know its a massive shame but I think that we'll find that the club had to use a lot of cash to keep Langley at the club. They said at the forum the clubs have been rocked by the wage demands of their homegrown talent as its now most important to get 8 homegrown players in the squad. Stu Duffy said clubs will now spend their money on fulfilling this rather than on marquee aussies/kiwis and you'd probably end up with 5 'James Evans' (would have been happy with that this season actually)

Does this mean we've got a big name homegrown player returning? - there are a few outthere. Remember the homegrown player is a lot more valuable to the original club

TBH yesterday I thought it was a pretty shabby way to treat him but after reading the T&A article I don't. They've done right by him. They've been straight with him. They only have one quota spot (with his contract up) they want to test the market to see if they can bring in a decent 3/4 (something I think we'll all agree on is needed) and rather than leaving him in limbo have told him he can talk to other clubs in order to ensure his future is sorted out. Say there's no one available or the decent 3/4 isn't counted on the quota then let's hope he hasn't signed for someone else. If he has then it's our loss but the club would have done the right thing by him and he deserves that honesty because he's been a great servant even in just 2 years of being with us.

It's such a shame that this great player won't get to finish his glittering career with you guy's. Have had a soft spot for Bradford since Daniel Gartner played for the Bulls, I think it may have been a reason as to why Beaver went there in the first place.

if sykes can get a new contract, surely the best player at our club can easily get a new one.

Hope We don't sign him, although he has been awesome for the Bulls he is 37, we need to be investing in a young british player who can give us 5+ years not a 1 season wonder, we have enough of them already, can't see Kear going for him he wont give JD another year at 34 with 7 years service to the Club...

Sykes doesn't use up a quota spot, is classed as a 'homegrown' player (of which we need 8 in our squad) and is probably on a lower salary than Menzies.

What would you think if the club was waiting on a decision from Willie Mason before deciding on whether to extend Menzies contract

Amen to Steve Menzies at the Bulls. What an enthusiastic and talented player he has been for us over two seasons. He gave us his all despite being in a poorish team, and showed a class that would have not been out of place in our very best sides in the recent past.
36-37 y.o. - hmmm, could certainly have done another year for us, but as has been said it depends on how his quota spot and salary is to be used.
IMO we do need to mark his last match at Gratten in some special way, tho I've no idea how to do this. We have a poor record in general in saying goodbye to valued players.

It would be good if we could put a montage together like we have done before. Its been an honour to see him play in the red,black and amber
