A few points:
Macca appointed them.
Strange how the club can afford to sack 2 assistants with a year left on their contracts, but not the head coach. Perhaps there are just plenty of good quality assistants available now (obviously unlike when they were appointed) but no decent alternative head coaches.
I am coming to the conclusion that the only reason Macca continues to pick Deacon is they are a mutual support agency & Macca worries he will lose his chief ally in the dressing room.

Has parallels with Leeds & Powell.

No, my point was that I had always assumed that - in an ideal world - the club would have wanted to have the relatively - inexperienced Macca supported by one or two more experienced lieutenants. Indeed, had I been in Macca's position I'm sure that's what I would have wanted. That's why I always assumed that the failure to do this was down to budgetary constraints.

If someone is able to demonstrate that that was not the case, and Macca picked his assistants over other, possibly more suitable, candidates, whom the club would have been prepared to engage, then yes I would be quite concerned.

Looks to me like McAvoy passed on those compromising pictures of McNamara and Hood to Deacon.

The lack of quality underneath Macca is a point I have made before.

Despite everything, I see Macca completing the job he has started (and doing it well). He does need the right people around him though

One thing I would like to say, especially concerning the news on the T&A today, is that somethings been addressed which I've believed has been the problem for a significant period of time.

Basil Richards and Lee St.Hilaire are far too inexperienced to coach at this level, in my opinion. I can't imagine Steve Mac being too confident turning to them in his hour of need for inspiration. Similarly, I can't forsee the likes of Burgess, Morrison and Lynch taking on board what they have to see, I could see a total lack of respect.

Steve Mac isn't a bad coach (I'm not opening that can of worms here however!), I just think he needed a more experienced no.2 to turn to. Jimmy Lowes certainly is more experienced than those 2 that appear to be leaving, and I only see that as a positive move for the club.

So why did he appoint them?

Who knows, maybe he's learnt from his mistakes (eventually), and realised they weren't the way to go to begin with.

Round in the circle we go...I'd always assumed it was cos of lack of dosh (although Red has pointed out indications possibly to refute that). And yes, I could not really imagine the likes of Morro and Beaver and Tez wanting to be told what to do by Baz and Lee tbh (although I speak from a position of little experience here, cos last time (bar one) I threw an oval ball in anger was packing down in the front row at school...).

As I think I said somewhere else, if the funds and approval were there to bring in more experienced lieutenants, and Macca spurned the opportunity, then he has to take the full blame for the failure of his subordinates here IMO.

Some people take less money for a job they really want.

This argument only holds so much weight. As I've posted on another thread, there are plenty of examples of teams with inexperienced back-room staff winning trophies (Leeds) and teams with experienced back-room staff (Wigan) failing to win things. It probably isn't helping McNamara but I doubt it is a major contributing factor to the poor season you've just had. Poor recruitment, good players not performing to potential and an apparent lack of ideas from the coach on how to change things are the main problems IMO.

He didn't when Huddersfield approached him about joining there staff.

Exactly the argument that it's all the assistant coaches fault is comedy gold.

I'm certainly not saying it's all the assistants fault by any stretch.

We don't know the circumstances under which they were employed (funds, availability etc), lets not forget, with all going on at the time Steve took over, there was probably an element of "panic" and a need to get people in those positions pretty quickly.

I just think Steves' strengths have probably been diluted by trying to cover off all bases and almost "train up" the two guys under him

I know we've been here before already today & while I have some sympathy with the possible lack of funds argument he still chose them. There will be a limitless supply of former players wanting a crack at coaching, Mac obviously chose the wrong ones.

Why would he have to train St Hilaire when he had already being an assistant coach for 3 years before he came here.
