Unfortunatley Chris Thorman is nothing special, he never has been and he never will be. He's a player that we should definatley avoid in my books. It's a shame we couldn't sign Long as he's still probably the best scrum half in Super League. However, it's very unlikley that we will sign anybody to play scrum half next season because Paul Deacon is still contracted for another season beyond this one, it would be advisable for people not to get their hopes up for a new 1st choice scrum half, we've got one and it's Paul Deacon and that's how it is staying for another season and a half as much as it pains me to see it.

Clears the way for Thorman, would you still want him Sam?

I think the scrum half from Donny "A" is best plyed at stand off outside the great Paul Deacon



Seriously, I think we need a top class halfback. Thorman may provide much needed competition for places but he's not going to provide much more in the way of quality.

Couldn't see Long appearing alongside our Turry in all fairness.

Can't say I'm too disappointed we didn't make a move. We need a 7 but I personally think Long is now well past his best. He's started to pick up a few injuries in the last few years too and Saints obviously felt he only had perhaps another year left in him. We need to recruit a scrum half who can be around for 3/4 maybe more years.

We already have one past their best scrum half... we certainly do not need another.

He had his major injuries when he was young though - like the facial reconstruction a certain nasty player gave him (who still gets booed to this day at KR

). He isn't injured any more or less than most other players.

I don't think the club's decision is really based upon Long as such. We're about to lose a few of our key players. We need to manage that and where possible our young players brought into the first grade this season will be trained up to fill those positions. It's more about the transition of the club into the Saints of the future than the ability of Long. He wasn't prepared to do what Cunningham has been doing now for a couple of seasons and take things on a year by year basis. He wanted a two year stability package and that was that for him. The club needed more flexibility given their need to plan for the future so couldn't make him that offer. Something had to give and Hull did just that! I hope he goes well for them. If he does, he will be a real asset to them IMO.

Ah I remember that. That's when his own teammate knocked him from behind and sent him flying forward into the accused's elbow/forearm. It was also clear on the replay that it wouldn't have happened had that teammate not knocked into him. Of course that bit tends to get forgotten......

Thorman's performance against us has been the best I've seen at Odsal so far this season.

That said he is very inconsistent, which probably makes him the ideal MacNamara signing.

Be careful if you are going through a rebuilding phase.

I'm guessing it's his off-field antics, but on the field he is one of the best SH's in the league, wouldn't count on quota and his kicking game is brilliant.

Said on the Virtual Terrace there is a new scrum half who has played both in Australia and UK. However i now know from a winger at Bulls that he is also talking to Bulls, but don't see it as it would involve a transfer fee.

Sorry i can't say more but it's positive. The scrum half who was in line to replace Long may be coming to you guys.

exactly and its not like its been one offs - he's been in trouble off field at every club he's been at. Suspect we'll end up with thorman as he doesnt seem to have settled at hull and is off contract at end of season so no transfer fee, plus he's a bit surplus to requirements now they've got long.

question is do we retain jeffries to play alongside him or use the quota spot to bring in a genuine stand-off. ( and thats assuming that we only see deacon as injury cover next year, which considering his performance so far this year we'd be crazy to consider him as a starting option).
