I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but I do like to have a selection of single malts on the go. Always like to try new ones. At the moment I've got a bottle of Laphroaig, Auchentoshan, Penderyn and the Macallan still to try.

I'm easy to buy for at Christmas if you're struggling what to get me.

I had never heard of it till Stan roped me in, but you might want to investigate the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. As it so happens, while they are in Scotland (and a London venue) they are having an event in Harrogate on 29th August.

You won't find any single malt with a "name". These are the royalty of malts, one-off brews, not named, just numbered, which when they're gone, they're gone.

There are different categories of membership and the basic is free.

Has anybody visited any of the distilleries? I've never had the chance but it's something that I'd like to do. I've been around plenty of breweries. Can't imagine that you'd get a free bar at the end of the tour though.

Been there many times over the years. They had the best selection I've seen in Yorkshire, though not [i:b6wnxxm2quite[/i:b6wnxxm2 all, though it looked like it!

There are around 120 malt distilleries, some of which may be 'silent' [mothballed at one time or an other. When you think of the different ages, and strengths, there are many hundreds of 'different' single malts on the market and that's before you factor in the varying oloroso/port/bourbon/double wood etc, barrels which are used for final maturation or 'finishing' [i:b6wnxxm2and[/i try Gordon and McPhail in Elgin or Cadenhead's in Edinburgh. Now they do have a collection and a half!

Bear in mind though that when you go to a whisky tasting at SMWS the stuff in the barrels is 60% ABV

I used to live in Elgin & Kinloss too, had lots of distilleries within easy distance & did a couple of whiskey trails in my 4 years up there.
Nairn is particularly nice & I had a weekend doing Mountain Rescue for the fell runners on the Isle of Jura so got a nice tour in & a Ceilidh (Scottish dance/festivities/drinking) in on the Sunday night which was fun.

and Forres which is a it smaller. I'd also recommend Dufftown, home of Wm Grants and the self appointed whisky capital of Scotland, which is a bit further south. There's something about these small Scottish towns...
