Toronto Wolfpack will definitely be in C1 and the Challenge Cup next season
www.loverugbyleague.com/news_217 ... eiled.html
Quote The new club will play home and away fixtures in four or five match blocks, and will play their home games at Lamport Stadium in Toronto. When in the UK for away matches they will be based in Bradford.
Brian Noble has been appointed director of rugby and Paul Rowley as head coach. Former Saints and Halifax player Adam Fogerty has joined the club as a director.
The Wolfpack claim they will commence an ambitious player recruitment campaign over the summer months, with their search for talent in North America being the subject of a reality TV series called Last Tackle.'"
Rowley coach and Nobby director of rugby!
Where did it all go wrong, Mr. Green?

| Curious as to how this will work with the salary cap, section on Salary Cap Qualifying Costs:
Quote
6.3
Player benefits
6.3.1
All accommodation costs paid by the Club including rent, council tax bills, telephone bills, heating and any other relevant costs. Where a Club owns a house then the “rent” shall be deemed to be the “rating value”
6.3.5
Cost of all travelling expenses paid to, or on behalf of, the player. Such expenses will include all airfares and relocation costs of non-British players, irrespective of whether they may be subject to income tax. '"
May be difficult to attract players if they can't support them in Toronto, or hammer their available cap if they do.

| ..absolutely barmy and unsustainable in the longer term.Suppose they will be induced to climb through the Divs as speedily as possible. The RFL will want to see their 'investment' pay! So,as most clubs get poorer, along with Catalans, the game is deemed to be heading global.Totally absurd and unnecessary for the welfare and development of our game, particularly for the lower divisions. As mentioned,I wonder what type of players will be recruited within the salary cap and how audience figures will effect their overall budget.Almost a dual registration scenario when calculating revenues between $'s and £'s. Whatever happened to the M62 corridor format of Rugby League... can't see a Canada invasion benefiting too many clubs or really catching the imagination of that many fans. The cost of following such a franchise would be mostly prohibitive and here am I thinking that such decisions were made with the paying spectators in mind.
Although this move might bring about a more attainable level of promotion through the leagues...after all, given our own position with the Middle 8's,they would never be able to make progress into SL...

NO salary cap for Toronto Invaders....
The club will not receive central funding from the RFL but are likely to get special dispensation to exceed the salary cap to enable them to run a full-time team and have pledged to cover all costs of visiting teams, who will fly out on a Thursday, play on Saturday and return the following day.

| Surley it would be better to send liason and development officers on medium to long term secondment, to grow and establish a competitive professional competition in Canada. I don't really see the benefit of having overseas teams playing in English competitions. What does it actually do for the game on a whole?

| You would assume they still have a salary cap, but expenses such as flights and accomodation are the parts given special dispensation, and understandably so. Although I expect London will be on the horn soon asking for the same (albeit at a lower level). I can't see it just being a "You don't have a salary cap, spend as much as you like on players".
The whole idea is barmy and I can't see how it's going to work. But I confess it's peaked my interest and I'm sure there are people behind the scenes that are better with money than I am who think it can work.

People just aren't thinking this through.
There is NO downside. All being done at the Canadian owners expense, and giving the game a rare little window of exposure too.
Sustainable? Like many clubs in many sports, they will be "sustainable" as long as a financial backer fancies sustaining them. That may spell trouble if the backer decides they've had enough, but looking at comparable sports globally, whilst that happens, it really isn't a major issue in any sport. Owners seem to be, in general, suckers for punishment, and on the rare occasions they depart, usually someone else steps in.
And, it's not the RFL's idea. How could it be, nobody would dream that one up. They were approached, thought about it, spoke with the clubs and -rightly so IMHO -said "crack on".
So talk of the RFL should have instead funded a growth program in Canada or other such twaddle is frankly deluded. The RFL would hardly have the funds to suddenly pay for a web of RL across fscking Canada, now would it, secondly it's hardly their job, thirdly it is up to the Canadians to lead any expansion of the game there, the RFL's place as well as the international board is to help and co-operate where it can.
Quote ="Bulliac" I feel it would have been better to try and grow the game over there and build from an amateur level'"
But what you feel is totally irrelevant, unless you had plans to fund such a thing. Secondly, many people posting have no idea of the actual current level of Canadian RL. I didn't either until a few weeks ago, when this news first came out but had a look into it and was pleasantly surprised. Only last weekend their season kicked off with the inaugural Ontario Nines, which featured a lot of junior activity too. Have a look here, you may be pleasantly surprised. www.canadarugbyleague.com/2016/0 ... rio-nines/
If the Canadians have got it wrong, then it's their problem, but they obviously feel that they need a bit of a standard bearer to spread the word and up their standards, as well as no doubt using the presence and publicity to attract new international recruits, and this is just part of the plan they have drawn.
People who think the Canadian backers have just come up with something on the back of a fag packet down the pub one night are seriously wrong. The Canadians have done a lot of work on this, they have clearly considered and addressed all the foreseeable issues (for example, playing 4 or 5 away games in "blocks" to cut out 80% of the travel) and it is actually rather insulting for people who have little idea of how structures a plan it is, to simply ridicule and dismiss it out of hand.
Will it help RL in this country? How can it not? A local game such as Keighley v Toronto Wolfpack is already on my buy-a-ticket list and if only the fixture planners don't clash them with local clubs I'd expect plenty of interested speccies turning up at those fixtures.
And as a player in C1, I'd guess an annual all-expenses paid trip to Canada would be viewed as some perk for most.
Speaking of players, in the Nines final,
Quote Tony “The Cat” Felix dived over from dummy half to tie it up 20 – 20, Felix converting his own try for the Centurions win and the title of 2016 ORL Nines Champions'"
Felix the Cat? If I were Green, I'd have signed the lad up yesterday, just for his name!

I think any increase in jobs for rugby players will automatically increase the number of professional players. Short term they will take players from here there and everywhere - if it works out they will attract their own eventually. Am I bothered about more jobs for rugby players? Well, only in as much as I'm basically in favour.

| The introduction to the club was on Premier Sports free view last night with the owners, Mayor of Toronto, Nigel Wood and the coach. They all came over very well. The press got straight to the point asking about travel costs and the owner said the direct flight to Manchester is the same price as flying to some places in Canada so that isn't a problem. The last RL game in Toronto got 7k crowd. Even the mayor pointed out that Toronto people are sport mad and will love seeing such as London, Cambridge and French and Welch teams coming to play there.
I was dubious about it but now I am all for it. I like FA will go down to Keighley when they fly in.
Rowley was also saying that they have organised a series of trials in Canada and across North America. He said they will sigh British players but they will also build a group of home grown players from Canada, America, Union and NFL. They have a target of one player very quickly.
The owner said Canadians will love the aggression and contact nature of the game.
It is also a long trip for Brisbane and NZ warriors to get to games and staying over when they do it. Us getting to Catalan's isn't a walk in the park either - in the days we did that!
I say well done to everyone involved and hope all fans get behind the idea and wouldn't we like to see them in our league.

| Ive got friends that play in championship 1 and they are buzzing at the thought of it! The players are the first people whos opinions matter not people behind a keyboard saying why it wont work! Why dont we look at the reasons it will work I guarantee its the first fixture the players will be looking for next year great team bonding exercise. And although they dont get masses they are still actually getting played to go to another country to play the game of rugby league! No downside whatsoever
