What do people think of his commentaries?

Agreed! Mind you, you don't have to be that good to be better than Ray 'errrrr' French!

I think he's OK, but he does get a bit distracted instead of concentrating on the match sometimes.

What do you think of radio Leeds commentators. That Mosedale fellow is very avergae. Who's the best on there. I Think James Deighton, Tim Steere, and harvey Wildes

To be fair, he's not going to call the game like they do on radio, I mean you can see what's going on so it's unnecessary and if he witters on occasionally about something else, well so be it. I think the contribution of the players and coaches is far more interesting anyway.

Woods IMO is the best primary British commentator going. Admittedly his competition isn't high (Eddie Hemmings, Ray French and that new fella on Premier, Ian Ramsdale is it?).

I think we've been spoiled somewhat for the world cup by being able to listen to a truly world class commentator in Andrew Voss. Makes you realise just how much a top mic man can add to a TV game, when he's not a stuttering wreck like French has been the last year or two, or too busy arguing with the bald idiot at the side of him.

The likes of Brian Noble make very good co-commentators too, along with Andrew Henderson (when he's available), Barrie Mac and Terry O'Connor. Again, makes you wish for regular days without Stevo or Jiffy.

Jon Wilkin was a tad dull though when he had a go.

Noble's a big microphone who does north to south commentary. Get that into yer.

Barry and Terry are ok when used singly. When together there are too many 'in jokes' and they spend too much time trying to get the better each other with silly quips.
The Aussies seem all right but when heard occasionally but, as with Stevo and Eddie, I guess we'd get fed up with their cliches which seem novel only because we don't get them every week.

It's not just that he is clueless, it's his godawful accent & pronunciation. Nothing against Welsh accents generally.

He is also totally obsessed with dummy runners. Which doesn't help the annoyance of his voice as the way he says it practically screams it to the viewer.

It's his total negativity that gets to me. He doesn't credit good play - just criticises mistakes made by the opposition.

Like other useless commentators every time a team with the ball tries something inventive in their own half & makes a mistake he harps on about why they should just drive it in, settle it down, not try anything stu-pid.

Jiffy seems to harp on about kicking far too much too.

At least he's stopped ranting about the mere existence of the video ref.

Ironic since he was one of the most inventive and instinctive players of his generation. His older self wouldn't approve of his younger self!

Agreed completely. It's like the bald muppet's repeated chastising of any player committing foul play.

I do Like him but whilst watching England vs Fiji it has become quite apparent he doesn't know which Burgess is which !

What's John Champion doing these days?

I seem to rememeber liking him but I'm not sure how much of that was down to him not being Ray French.

It's like listening to Ray French getting them all mixed up. Ray would have been in his element today with all those Sims, Millard And Burgess'

It's ironic really but everyone thinks of Eddie Waring as 'an idiot in a pork pie hat' but he had a fantastic knowledge of Rugby League and was even a Gb tour manager in his younger days !!!!

I was lucky enough to talk to him several times and his knowledge and enthusiasm was fantastic.

But when you look back Eddie, Bill McLaren, Peter O'Sullivan, Brian Johnson, David Coleman and Murray Walker were streets above a lot of today's commentators yes some could be eccentric at times but boy did they have the respect of players and fans alike !!!

There are a few lessons today's commentators could learn from them !!
