I think part of the problem is that you can turn up to watch a very different game if one referee rather than another is in the middle.
My gripe is not that any given referee is inconsistent within their own performance, rather that there seems to be significant difference in interpretation of the rules from one ref to the next, particularly around the ruck, as was shown at MM. As such I would genuinely rather watch Silverwood at the moment than Childs (as an example rather than supporting the comments on this thread) as the former allows a freer flowing game.
Beyond that, refs will always make good and bad decisions and have good games and bad games, just as players will, and that has not and will not change.
