The trick is to pull of one by one and fill the gap behind the ruck so that when the guy plays the ball the defensive line is set. If you can get the attacker on his back and facing the wrong way even better.
As you say it's no good getting bodies into the tackle if you're going to let the guy up before everyone is ready so that the attacking side can steal cheap yards behind the ruck.
This particular area has been a problem for us for years. Even during the glory years we sometimes struggled to contain Saints around the ruck as they had good technique and good dummy half runners. Now any SL team seems better organised and has better technique!
