I wonder why no club thought of naming rights to stadiums when they first shot up during the initial sporting boom of the late 19th Century. It was, after all, during the industrial revolution... but maybe back then less things could be rodgered up the bumhole with a banknote.

Easy! the same money was not spent then on marketing as it is now.

I really hope that the Stadium gets a really good name/sponsor to brand it and also really hope it is a long term deal with huge investment from it... Lets hope it brings a winning brand of Rugby League back home too!

B&Q are looking at buying the naming rights, which is fantastic news and would be another fantastic brand to be backing the club.

Dont know if it has been posted before. But the new Stadium could be be "The Saints Stadium" and then the name can be prefixed with any Brand name. PG Saints Stadium,Tetley Saints Stadium. Pilkington Saints Stadium Etc.

I agree with that. The Halo is a great marketing idea. There are several stadiums around the world which either don't have the word stadium in the title or aren't referred to as such and such stadium e.g. Anfield, Old Trafford, Great American Ball Park, Maracana, Wembley, Bernabau, Nou Camp, The Bird's Nest, Wrigley Field, Madison Square Garden, Lord's, Soccer City, Central Park, Knowsley Road, Meadowlands, Fenway Park, The KC, Highbury (which was actually called Arsenal Stadium), etc. All of those stadiums are instantly memorable and 'The Halo' has the same type of marketability. In fact in most instances people drop the word stadium when referring to going to a ground which makes the issue of whether the naming has the word stadium in the title as irrelevant.

I don't know any other grounds/stadiums in the world that are referred to as 'The Halo' which makes it unique, distinctive and relevant given our club branding is Saints.

The problem is though, that something so distinctive is actually counter productive when it comes to naming rights.

For example - The Galpharm Stadium. The "Stadium" bit is mundane, so everybody refers to it as "The Galpharm". Say that was Saints' sponsor and it was The Galpharm Halo. "Halo" is not irrelevant, it's distinctive and has deep rooted connections with the town and club. Everybody would just call the ground "The Halo" regardless of sponsor IMO.

Having said that - the people that count (TV/Radio) could probably be forced to use the full name?

Plus I guess nobody called Knowsley Road the GPW, but TV did.

I like the Pilkington's stadium, pruely because it invented one of the best products man has ever invented.

Yeah call it the Halo and I can go to games dressed as Master Chief and become even more of a legend.

Why is it? Corporate sponsors will still be happy to have their name in front of it because they're sponsoring the association with the team and their profile not the actual block of bricks. Whether the public calls it that is another thing but it will not prevent us being able to attract sponsors. What difference does it make if it's called The Typhoo Halo or The Typhoo Stadium? I suggest it would be pretty insignificant. After all we managed to attract a sponsor to Knowsley Road which doesn't have half the appeal of what the new ground will have.

If Man Utd threw open naming rights for Old Trafford but would only accept them if Old Trafford remained in the title do you think that corporate sponsors would think twice about it? I don't. I bet they'd be banging down the door with their millions. In any event I would prefer our new home to be memorable above everything else and 'The Halo' is that. If it meant an extra £20k a year to have the ground called XYZ plc Stadium I'd rather keep 'The Halo' otherwise it becomes just one more A N Other Stadium like the HJ, DW, Emirates etc., whose identity becomes tied to a corporate sponsor rather than the team. They are sponsoring us. We are not handing them the keys to who we are.

I don't understand why people can't see that we can protect our identity and have corporate sponsorship at the same time. It's far from impossible because the two are perfectly compatible. In fact, thinking about it, being known as The Halo is a great marketing tool for the corporate sponsors as well because there is no other prominent sporting venue in the world called The Halo which shows it can be a USP for our club. The Halo is modern, different, imaginative and creative which is also everything that this club is.
